Competitions Ending

  • I love the ending threads.

As I have only just started to do them, I have found that I need to look for one thread with an ending date in 2 or 3 days and I can quite happily sit there for a few hours going down the list and enter the ones I take a fancy to.

For me they have been a fantastic tool as I would never have found a third of them otherwise.

It has been unfortunate that there has been a bit of upset around them but as with anything new, there will always be teething troubles but it would have come good in the end surely.

The dedication shown by those that compiled the lists is nothing short of fantastic and I thank you for them.

I will miss them if they go permanently as I will probably lose heart trying to search for comps after then.

Could there not have been one sticky with a list of the dates - the dates being the link to the comps ending xx from there? That would have meant only one thread (I think - not to clever with the technical side of things!!). Please Please Please don't shout at me if I am wrong.

    Thank you anyway.

I personally like the competitions ending threads.

I work offshore and can be quite often away from this forum for up to 6 weeks, due to limited use of the internet, and this helps me enter the occasional comps that I wish too.

If it ends so be it, but thanks to all that have posted them.
  • I fully respect the decision made - but if any reconsideration is given then my thoughts are -

    1) Any arranging of who does what is done off site so not to clogg up the threads

    2) Closing threads should not be posted more than 2 days in advance

    3) only one thread per date, no part one, two etc

Yes - I used them, found it a great help, I don't enter every comp, just those that can use or share with family. The last few prizes I won were via ending ones. Comping should get back to being fun and no squabbling.

Finally would like to say thanks to everyone who posts, original posts or ending xx, it kept me going when off sick for 8 weeks, shame can't spend as much time on here now, hence appreciating the ending posts.

I don't have time to thrawl the 100-odd pages of comps, I also often find that I will click a post that I have already entered as someone may have bumped it back to the first page. Many of the comps posted on the first pages are months away. So yes, I admit that I loved the comps ending posts as they helped me to enter comps ending soon, compiled in one easy place.

Unfortunately I have had litte to no success at all doing a proper seach for end dates, so personally I would find it a shame that they would go.

Just a (perhaps silly) question, why could the ending comps posts not get their own sub-forum, like the 'I won' and 'Daily comps'? In that set-up, they'd be out of the way for everyone who finds them clogging up the general comps forum. And I think some basic rules could be decided upon. I won't be able to contribute more than I do now, which is very little, the odd competition every now and then, as mosts comps have already been posted by the time I hear about them and time is a bit of a contraint for me. I am, however, very grrateful to all who post comps and have compiled the lists!

Unlike other people, I unfortunately don't have the spare time to cross reference comps entered here with the comps ending on Loquax or other threads. I am a one-website girl, I found MSE a very welcoming and friendly place. It is a real shame that these posts have caused so much commotion.

I would sincerely miss the ending comps posts, but if that is the way the BG's have decided then so be it :-)

Again, thank you very much to all who have posted and for welcoming me into your community.
Life without string would be chaos.

It seems to be a new influx of compers that are trying to change the board, but I don't see why we need this huge amount of duplicated comps - stick to what has worked in the past, why not try it before trying to change it.

Yeah, new people always cause problems!! The price you have to pay fo a popular website.
eg, ebay used to be great before everyone started to use it which caused more rules and regs to be introduced.
  • I cannot see why a new section cannot be made where the ending lists are posted..........leaving the original board as it was therefore giving the best of both worlds...just a thought

I agree with you Knightowl, sounds like a great idea
  • I set up this poll so those who thought their voice hadn't been heard, prior to the decision being made to stop the threads, could finally do so. In anyone's books the current result is more surprising than even I could have imagined. :T

It will be running until 23/03 so feel free to spread the word of its existence to everyone. We need a good cross section and I hope the comments here show representation of that.

I won't be, however, spending any more time trying to kick you all into action. We have some encouraging results yet it is to be seen if anything will even be done about it. I'll volunteer my time again should the threads proceed though. Don't see this as me bailing out at a crucial moment. I'll be watching with great interest.

Please take the time to read the Forum Rules and Board Guide role description and Martin Lewis' own post on this kind of matter to decide what to do with all this information from there. Ask questions such as: is it appropriate to have this poll AFTER a decision has already been made?; is it appropriate for board guides to DEMAND stopping the comps ending threads?

As Martin rightly says board guides can NOT be questioned over their actions yet they're NOT always right.

Please keep any further discussions away from personal attacks. We've done pretty well on that front so far and it would be a shame to lose that. :A

I decided to make a start on all the posted comps, I have started from the back and it is taking forever!! In the end I have had to give in and opt for the comps ending whilst they are still around.

Please dont take away the comps ending!!

Somedays, there were very few of interest, but it was so easy just to check down the list.

Yes it has to be organised, yes we should only post 2-3 days before hand and only one post!!

    Where is the harm?

If I use Loquax how will I know if I have entered before!!

I like to enter in this way for the simple reason that it excites me. Its almost instant, but even better as you can expect a response fairly quickly.

If you are lucky, you may see the benefits of your hard work reasonably quickly!!
