Farm Shop shopping

Can someone please give me some guidance on shopping in farm shops?
For instance, how much cheaper will buying sacks of potatoes and large bags of onions be? Also, if I buy a sack of tatties and keep them how long could I store them for if kept somewhere cool?
Hope it isn't an obvious question, but I am starting to think that with my family it's going to work out more cost effective to shop this way but I will need to plan a trip out to a farm shop!

Hi there,
I used to know a grocers shop who would take orders one day for bulk items and would collect them the next morning at the traders veg/fruit market and would then deliver for 50p. I used to order sacks of spuds (£5), sacks of onions (£3) and boxes of oranges (£10 for 40) and then I would split them with a friend. We split them because we couldn't get through the spuds before they started to sprout and go wrinkly even though I kept them in my garage where it was cool and dry. It was a great saving though and even though we split them they lasted ages. At that time we were a family of 2 adults and one toddler...if your family is bigger you may get through them quicker.
I have moved since then away from Hull but as soon as I can find somewhere to buy sacks from again (and someone to share with....Calderdale...any takers?) I will definately do the same again.
HTH

Bear in mind a farm shop is no guarantee of where the food comes from, it could be the same imported stuff you get anywhere else.0

I buy the sacks of spuds (also in Hull) £5.99.. a full sack last about 5-6 weeks as there are 10 of us.
I get the full sacks of stuff from the local fruit shop.. they buy them from the same place the farm shops do!!!!!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Hi Pigpen
I lived off Chants ave and liked Simon's cos they delivered. Newland ave is great though I miss it. Its taken me 3 months to find an asian supermarket here to replace that one:p

Farm Shops are pretty thin on the ground where I live as its mainly sheep/dairy farming. So I tend to get my veg from the local asian supermarket. Its £5.20 for a sack of spud and £2 for a sack of onions.I wont buy fruit there as its not the cleanest shop in the world

I find the farm shops in Reading area very pricy, but as you have all pointed out the asian shops are fab for fruit and veg. I find that its cheeper than even the market. Its always lovley and fresh. I can only afford fresh herbs if i buy them from there as well about 50p for a big bunch of anything.0

Bearing in mind my other post - watch out if you're buying eggs from a farm shop. The code should begin either OUK (organic) or 1UK (free range).:wave:0
