    Hi younggrandmother,

There's an earlier thread on farm shops that should give you some idea of whether or not they are value for money so I've added your question to that to keep all the replies together.

    Hi

I shop at the local farm shop and some of the meat is dearer than supermarkets and some is more expensive. I would say ALL of it is better quality though. My local farm shop does 4lb of best minced beef for a fiver - I reckon that's quite cheap. You can get a joint for about the same price in the supermarket but as I said much nicer quality. Chicken is slightly more expensive where I go but again better. They also do home made lamb/beef burgers which are wonderful - about £1.50 for 4 and they are excellent - no shrinkage and they taste lovely. They also have an amazing deli counter with all sorts of cooked meats and cheeses that I find about the same price as supermarkets, only problem is the cheese is to die for!!

  • I love my local farm shop. It is 3 miles away and I cycle there on my day off Fridays. Last week I came back with a big rucksack full and carrier bags on both handle bars. I spent £9. the meat is all locally reared and fantastic. I don't buy it though unless it has a short date. It is then reduced to half price. I had a goergeous rib of beef for £5.50 and a shoulder of lamb for the same price. The milk is £1.24 for 4 punt bottle and the free range eggs are £1.30 a dozen.
If I am getting a sack of potatoes I drive. But it is a bit warm to keep a sack of spuds now. They sell them in smaller bags and cheaper than the supermarket.

I find farm shops to be very pricey both in central Scotland and South Hampshire. They are usually quite limited in choice and the staff are no more friendly than a supermarket. Even PYOs aren't that much cheaper. Ready picked strawberries are the same price in Tesco per kg.

I think they are cottoning on to us:(

    and Farmer's Markets

My favourite farm shop sadly closed as they went on to bigger and better things but the husband was a butcher and used to hand pick his beasts for slaughter and the meat was delicious and his wife was a wonderful baker. Fortunately though my local butcher is pretty good and makes a lovely steak pie.

Possibly in the wrong place but was unsure where to put it so I apologise in advance.
Today is the day I start my diet! (yes yes I know you have heard it all before) However I am looking for a local farm shop where I can go weekly to buy the fruit and veg for me, OH and the kiddies, does anyone know of any good farm shops in Blyth Northumberland. I did a search but the ones I found are all proper shops rather than the kind I used to go to where it was in a barn and you could get bags of potatoes and carrots etc ...

    Can anyone help?
    Thankyou

    Hi Rusty

You might be better off posting this in the OLD Style forum - someone on there is bound to help you out.

Buy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning

Have a look on the BigBarn site: https://www.bigbarn.co.uk

You enter your postcode and you can see where the farm shops are.

This is a very useful site.
