Im confused over knitting and wool

Hope someone can help me.
Ive asked a good friend to do some knitting for me for my little girl. She lent me some patterns and ive picked out the ones that I want.
Can anyone please tell me where I can get good prices double knit and 4 ply wool. There seams to be a lot of buttons brand new on Ebay so im sorted there but the wool seams to really varie in price. I live in Leicester so have all the normal shops in the city centre.
I believe ive seen wool in Wilkos before but I think thats double knit as it looks very thin. So its the 4 ply I gues im realy struggling with. I dont mind shopping online. Any rough guides as to how much each double and 4ply costs roughly per 100g ball would really help to.
Sorry ive got so many questions. I cant knit myself so im totally lost
Thanks in advance

    Hi!

Ive bought quite a bit from markets and haberdashers stores, im sure there will be loads near to you. Ive found some good stuff on Ebay too, if you know how much you need then it should be easy enough to find what you are looking for.

As for prices, they vary greatly, and Im not really an expert, as I dont really pay that much attention to the prices, I just buy whatever is pretty and grabs my attention and just make whatever comes to mind with it.

Im sure one of the more experienced will be along soon though to give you some more relevant and helpful information. Have you ever tried knitting?? I think you should get your friend to teach you, its really relaxing to do in front of the TV, and I always feel really proud when ive done yet another scarf!!

Lidl are selling cotton and cotton-mix knitting yarn soon, I hope the above link works Starts from Thursday 28th July, pack of 3 balls for £1.49. Looks like a great deal to me.

If you only need two or three 50g balls, look in the oddment box at your local wool shop, they sometimes sell them for 40-50p a ball.

Good quality wool (Sirdar, Hayfield) will be about £1.50 - £2.00 a ball, but cheaper wool can be as little as 99p for 100g.

Market stalls, Lidl, Wilkinsons, even charity shops sell cheap wool.
When my daughter was small, I used cheaper wool, as she grew out of it so quickly, then as she got older I used the good wool because it washes and wears so much better.
I hope you learn to knit eventually, you will never regret it, it is so relaxing and your sense of achievement will stay with you for every garment you do.

I used to be always knitting when my children were smaller and also knitted many garments for a local wool shop.

Lately I've been knitting for my grandchildren and can't seem to find any good wool shops in the nearest town (Preston). Cheaper wool bought from the market doesn't wash nearly as well as more expensive brands such as Sirdar, Phildar etc. It seems to stretch when washed and lose its shape.

I used to always prefer Sirdar wool as it washed really well and kept its bright colour. You could look at their website at http://www.sirdar.co.uk/
    to check prices.

    Good luck

I have been making those fluffly scarves that everyone is wearing this winter and I have discovered a fab website called ems-stitches.co.uk which is competitively priced, free delivery (we all like that don't we?) and a great service. She sells all sorts of fancy wools and I think is a fairly new small business so it's nice to support her. About 6 of us at work are all knitting these scarves to commission now (not just woolly ones, but pretty evening ones too). I have progressed onto cushion covers now which I am really enjoying as I can play around with fancy stitches. These will be for my own home!

Hi, I live in Leicester as well, in town on Charles Street (where wilkinsons is), further along that road, going back towards town, these a charity shop, can't remember the name but last time I was in there, I saw they sell new balls of wool.

Apart from that Button Butique (sp) near St Martins Square sells wool.
  • Libra - the only wool shop I know of in Preston is Linda's at Lane Ends (Ashton) otherwise it's Hobbiecraft on Deepdale Retail Park.

my mum knits for DD and she goes on the local market, however if she is knittig somehing fancy she uses sidar which tends to be expensive but it is good quality.

In the shop near us there is always a bargain bucket so the colour of DD cardigans depends on what is in there. prices £2-£2.50 a ball. 4 ply is very fine It tends to be dearer than DK
