Sorry to butt in on your thread but while you are talking about knitting I wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction to get free knitting patterns. My Nan was after patterns for baby cardigans, She knits them in her spare time then donates them to charity.

There are masses of free patterns out there. Just Google for "free patterns"+"knitting" and you will be overwhelmed. :D They are mostly American though, some terms are slightly different but anyone who knits can work them out easily enough.

For the original poster, there is a shop in the covered market in Leicester (I think it is on the second floor and called County Yarns, but you can't miss it); the prices are as reasonable as any yarn shop I have found (which is to say not very very cheap but OK). However I would recommend at least one trip there and a purchase as the people who run it are very friendly and helpful to new people as well as to experienced customers and they will be happy and able to tell you which yarns will work with which patterns etc. As someone else said the charity shops on Charles Street are good two; the one which is one a corner halfway between the big Wilkinsons and Humberstone Gate had lots of needles for sale cheaply if you ever want to take it up yourself.

For the person looking for free knitting patterns two very good sites well arranged with lots of choice are knittingpatternscentral and knitting.about.com - there are also some fun patterns on knitty but I'm still frightened of most of them :o
  • For the OP the question regarding double knitting and 4pl please note that double knitting yarn is twice as thick as 4ply(approx). 4ply is the thin one which is knitted on very fine needles. Double is the most common in the cheaper oulets and you should get some for approx £1 for 100g.
