i had no problem cancelling online, very easy.
  • We took a trial 18 months ago. We decided that it wasn't for us, and cancelled it at the end of the free period, but a couple of months later they took nearly £30 from our account. It turned out that they claimed that we hadn't returned a DVD. We had returned it long before we cancelled. They said that we would have known about the 'missing DVD' and the 'subsequent charge' if we looked at our account... the account that we'd cancelled, so hadn't felt we needed to log into. Apparently, if we had logged in we could have claimed it as lost. What a joke!

Just a warning then; if you cancel your account, make sure they have all the DVDs recorded as being returned (or check that they've been received) otherwise you could get the same nasty shock we got!
  • Surely you can just cancel the direct debit set up with your bank, and can do that if you have online banking?

That's what I do for any free trials.

As the current LoveFilm Trial allows for online streaming of movies (so no discs) you don't encounter the old problems with discs not being received back & incurring charges even though you think you've sent them back in time. So much better. No complications or hassles when I cancelled the other day. I too had been caught out by them years ago with the postal disc trial. HTH someone who is too scared to get their cashback for fear of incurring costs!
  • From memory,i took out a few love film trials & if you rang after a certain time 9 or 10 in the evening (i think),it was an automatic cancelling process! No humans there to dissuade you

I recently cancelled my LoveFilm 3 month trial which was a groupon deal that I purchased for £4. I simply emailed LoveFilm explaining my reasons for leaving, and then explained that I did not want to cancel through the phone because I didn't want any marketing trying to get me to stay. They responded to confirm my cancellation and then completed the cancellation once they received the two dvd's I returned, the cancellation will have been almost instant from them receiving the DVD's.

    Excellent service all round !!!
  • I joined a couple of months ago with a special offer. I'm not really into watching films but thought I would give it a go. Thought the service was brilliant. Felt I always had a DVD to watch. Only problem was finding the time to watch one.

Rang up about 3.30pm today to cancel, they offered me an alternative price structure and a couple of months free, but I declined as I really have struggled to find the time to watch them. No problem.

Account will be stopped as soon as I return this disc back to them and I was also advised to obtain a proof of postage from the post office which is free.

Great service - just didn't use it!
  • Sounds like it's a bit of a nightmare. I have always avoided offers where you're doing part of a subscription since there are always people who have trouble cancelling for whatever reason. I also feel dubious about returning things since Royal Mail aren't the most reliable people.

I think I'm more swayed towards Netflix or renting from iTunes since there's nothing to return :D
  • Just wondering if anyone has advice on when to cancel to ensure the cashback through quidco is paid? I am on the stream-only trial so no worries about sending discs back.

    I signed up using this:
    1. This offer expires at midnight on 31/12/2012
    2. To register for your free trial, a valid credit or debit card is required and you must be 18 or over.
    3. Your free trial expires 30 days after registration
    4. Depending on the package you choose, you may have either 1, 2 or 3 discs out at any one time. Excludes Pay Per View services
    5. You can cancel your subscription at any time
    6. Existing or previous subscribers to LOVEFiLM, or free trialists of LOVEFiLM or any LOVEFiLM–powered site are not eligible to receive this offer.
    7. At the end of your free trial, you will automatically become a paying member unless you cancel your subscription and return any of our discs in your possession BEFORE the end of your free trial.
    8. This offer may not be redeemed in conjunction with any other offer and is limited to one per household
    9. All information is correct at the time of print and is this offer is subject to change or removal without prior notice.
    10. Terms and conditions apply. Visit https://www.lovefilm.com for further details

The service is OK - I signed up on a whim as I had a night in and wanted to watch a movie. However I'm not getting the use out of it and can't justify the subscription charge.

I would like to receive the cashback though :). It tracked the day I signed up. Can anyone confirm if this is paid if the subscription is cancelled before the expiry of the trial? I know I could pay month's subscription and hope that the cashback pays but I wouldn't want to risk it as I'm not using the service!

I still haven't managed to cancel my Lovefilm. :( It's been a couple of months now.

Interesting about the call centre being UK based though. I wonder why everyone you ever speak to at Lovefilm sounds sort of Indian and has an Indian name? That's a bit odd.

People just make the assumption I guess. If you call the same company a few times and everybody sounds Liverpudlian or Welsh or whatever, I guess we just assume the call centre is in Liverpool or Wales respectively.

    So, to summarise:

    My list is empty.

I can't find any way to close my Lovefilm account online at any time of the night.

When I emailed they told me I'd have to telephone.

When I telephone they are friendly and chat away very nicely and two of them have offered to pray for me and my finances  but the one thing they don't do is close my account for me.

It's not a direct debit so I can't cancel the direct debit. (It's a card payment.)

I've been with them for a few years, and planned to go back in a year or so when hopefully there'll be a build up of films that I want to see.

However, now I feel that when I eventually do manage to extricate myself from Lovefilm's clutches I'll never ever sign up again.
