What is the cheapest price you can rent a phone line from BT per quarter? We want to use another provider for calls but were told you cant just rent a line you have to take a call package. Tried looking on their confusing home page but dont really understand it.

Thanks

Light user scheme is £9.90 a quarter if paying by DD or £10.58 if paying any other way.

For the normal user, the cheapest it £10.50 a month if paying DD or £11.50 if paying any other way.

You can't have the light user scheme if:

have a telephone service provided by another supplier, either directly or indirectly
have a telephone service provided by a mobile network operator, either directly or indirectly
have more than one telephone line at the same or different address, for example at a holiday home
    have an ADSL
have a line used exclusively for a burglar alarm (this does not include "lifeline" alarm systems which are also used as telephones)
have an ISDN line or business line
have a payphone line, residential BT rented cardphone or temporary line.
have a line with incoming calls barred (i.e. your line only allows outgoing calls)
have an incoming line only, because you owe money to BT.
If customers have a second line because they are responsible for paying the telephone bill for a relative, they may be eligible.

    Thanks Heather

From what you say I dont qualify for the light user rate, so if we go to BT and say we just want line rental, our bill will be £31.50 a quarter and we dont have to take any other package.

    Is that right?

Yes. But if you make the odd call through BT you can get free caller display, normally £1.75p a month.

Out of interest what other provider, and package are you thinking of using?

As you'll be using another carrier for your calls then you need BT Together Option 1 at £10.50 per month if paying by DD.

See here for details of their BT Together Option 1 package though ignore the call charges as you will be using another carrier.

Also, once you are connected to BT then you can enjoy free Caller Display (saving £1.75per month) providing you make "some" calls per billing period. See this thread for more info about Caller Display.

BT do a free reconnection providing the house has had BT before and all the cables are still going to the house. If on the otherhand, the house has never had BT before I believe they charge £75 installation charge for a brand new line.

Minimum period for a reconnection is 3months and for a new installation it is 12months.

Visit BT's website here for info on reconnecting or new connection.

    UPDATE:
Sorry PF by the time it took me to write this epilogue you had already posted. lol.

We are probably going to sign up with Talk Talks special offer (as per Martin's rec.) as my husband will be working from home and using the phone a lot.

We did have NTL but had lots of problems so will reactivate the BT line.

    Thanks for replies
