There is stain block paint to use before you paint

no you dont need special paint
you need to seal the stain by using oil based undercoat or gloss, you might need a couple of coats
I have used this trick several times. (supplied by one of the old type decorators, who told my dad a few years ago)
yousmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

I have done this too using gloss paint, and it always works.

gloss paint is good, or there is a spray which you can put on, which I used which was excellent. It didn't come through at all. I can't remember the name, but the local decorating centre would advise you. It wasn't too expensive, and I have now got plenty left just incase the toilet decides to have a divvy in the future !

I thought a coat of PVA glue was meant to do the trick! That's what I was planning to use on my kitchen ceiling anyway.

Oil based undercoat is best. Leaves a better finish for covering with emulsion.0
