Re: the suspension 'leak' debate going on. I have it on good authority that the testers manual states........

That a tester must examine each shock absorber for fluid leaks. It states that you have to ensure that any fluid near the unit is from the shock absorber and not from another source.

It goes on to state that a slight seepage causing a thin fluid on a shock absorber is not a reason for rejection.

In essence therefore only a fluid leakage serious enough to indicate that the fluid seal has failed is a reason for failure.

Experience and discretion of tester are therefore allowed.

    Thank you Wig and Importanceofbeingidle.

Now wouldn't it be nice to get an apology from that awful, sarcastic message directed at me from Conor.

If he's a real man he will... :rotfl:

I was nagging the crap out of the guys at work today to come on here!! But they wouldn't! Well, we were busy! Three of them, one of them is my boss, are MOT Testers and have been for many years and regularly attend all the VOSA seminars. They are very very above board. Would never pass a car as a favour. It would damage their own and the company's reputation - which is very good.

    Cheers guys!

If Conor's past behaviour is anything to go by, he will never return to this thread.

    :D
Fortunately I'm not holding my breath anyway and secondly, I'm not bothered - I knew I was correct. I type advisory's enough and I'm always asking what when and why! And I know I work for very good and very rule abiding people!

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • He'll probably be hiding behind the bikesheds - seeing if they've got any advisorys....... :rotfl:

I think any MOT tester can put what they like on the advisory notices as it mentions that the advisory notices are the MOT tester's opinions only and nothing to do with the MOT test or something along those lines.

The advisory notice is for things that haven't failed the MOT but given a short amount of time, they will. IE my leaky suspension.
This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down
  • am picking the car up this afternoon so will let you know what the advisory says. glad to have caused such a discussion / ruckus!!!
  • OK then, advisory note says:

Nearside inner front brake disc slightly pitted
    Offside " " " " " "

Nearside front shock absorber has a slightly reduced damping effect
    Offside " " " " " " " "

Nearside front shock absorber has a light misting of oil (haha)
    Offside " " " " "

So (with my lack of knowledge) these faults don't look to me as urgent as he made out to me... Either that or it was but he illegally persuaded the MOTer otherwise. please enlighten me with your opinion if you wish to!

Anyway I'm happy to have new brakes, they feel v different, but glad I waiting for the other bits. They also valeted and washed and waxed the car which was nice - due to living in a flat and my stinginess (which clearly should be redirected at the £100s for car repairs rather than the £3 for a carwash) I haven't hoovered inside or washed it for 2 years...
  • so if the shocker has a slight leak,or weeping or sweating and you can prove with out doubt the fluid has come from the shocker its a fail,if your not sure then its a pass with possible advisory.

am i right in thinking this then?

another thing,in a roundabout way i was pulled over by the police a few weeks ago,i got a speeding ticket, and one of the officers noticed my number plate, not a private plate just original.
i had to get new plates made up last year,he said they were not spaced correctly,no post code of supplier or name of supplier or british standard number. i was aware of this being a recent requirement by the dvla but thought like most of you will have, they wont bother with it.but they do,i had to get new plates made up get a ticket issued by the police stamped by an MOT inspector.i done this tonight at a local garage, the guy said they started to fail almost every car coming through the door because of this,as so many cars were failing the DVLA told them not to put it down as a fail anymore just an advisory.
do you think they have realised how stupid the new rule is?
