Shock absorbers can weep for some years before they get to leaking badly enough to fail an MOT. But they will be mentioned on the advisory.
Common sense has to prevail here.
shock absorbers must not leak and must be secure (the vehicle will be 'bounced' by the Tester to check that they damp the springs adequately).
that is from www.motester.co.uk
leaking, weeping, sweating whatever,a leak is a leak.
Common sense will prevail if its involved in an accident and isnt roadworthy at time of accident....work permit granted!0 -

Thanks for all the help and advice guys. I have decided to keep the car as at the moment I won't have time to try and sell it over the next couple of months and can't handle the hassle of that right now! I've asked the garage to fix the brake-related things now as I'm not happy "chancing it" with brakes and I'm happy to pay to get them replaced now even if they don't need it right this second. For the other things I will shop around for another quote and then try harder to get a better recommended garage when we move!
Thanks again for all the advice, it's all much appreciated.0 -
Me to I used to be a mechanic before I made changes in my life and started working on computers for a living, the one which really jumps out at me and says na way you can say it passed but has an advisory notice on is the rear brake cylinder.
That is either leaking or it aint, cos they dont have the rear wheels off and drums off you you carnt check for slight weeping, in an MOT you would only know if the rear brake cylinder is gone by the fact the backplate is covered in fluid and inside the inpection holes the shoes would be covered in fluid, but in that case it would have failed.
I would definatly be very very suspicious, I bet half the work dont even need doing if they have made that up, they are obviously struggling for work and need to rip off there customers cos thats exactly what it sounds like to me.
Find somewhere that will do you a free brake and suspension check and dont mention that you just had the MOT done and were told about these items and see what a different place says.0 -

I would have collected the vehicle from the garage saying you don't have the money. Looked and read the advisory, posting it here for all us nosey's
Looked with a torch under the rear drums for any sign of a leak. And taken it to Kwik Fit for a free inspection (not mentioning the MOT), and asking them to pay special attention to the advisory areas.
Then acted accordingly, if there was a leak on the rear cylinders then take it back to your friend the garage to get it fixed. and worry about the rest accordingly depending on the seriousness.
Make sure you get the MOT paper incl the advisories. It could be it had no such advisories and he was making it up. But still return here and tell us what the advisories say. We want to know.0
