They can't weep. Any sign of oil and it's a fail.

Boy do I wish I had a copy of an advisory which read.......

    For example:

O/S/F shock absorber has a light misting of oil.

A sign of oil Conor and its a fail??

    You are wrong!

Yeah, of course I'm wrong, even though it states in the MOT manual (linked above) that a shocker must not leak.

I mean, how silly of me. !!!!!! would I know? After all, I've only got a CGLI 383 Repair & Servicing of Road Vehicles and am time served in Land Rover and Nissan main dealerships.

OTOH, the MOT examiner is likely to have given the advisory whilst exercising leniency. Doesn't mean they were right to - like the MOT testers who used to fail old Mk3 and MK 4 Escorts on rust holes in the battery tray even though it wasn't a testable item....

But hey, I humbly apologise for not realising that you would know far more than a trained and experienced mechanic.

Oh and can you do me a favour? One of the retaining clips on a rocker shaft has come loose on my car. I know that I am in no way anywhere near ever able to attain your level of knowledge and expertise so can I bring it round for you to do because I'm afraid I might mess it up and I only reconned the engine 10 months ago.

I think it goes down as an advisory as they advise you that it should be there but it isn't.

Morg - It would be a great help if you could post what the advisory note says.

Load of piffle. The spare wheel is irrelevant when it comes to an MOT. It's not a failure nor is it an advisory if it's missing. It makes no difference whatsoever.

Nope. It's an advisory. My car got an advisory notice for a leaking shock last year. I've not replaced it because I can't be bothered. It just bangs if I go over a pothole.

As for the brakes, if they used them on the rolling road and they worked then they pass. The advisory might have been given to alert the owner that they won't pass the next MOT. Not necessarily a failure.

  • I too have an 11 year old car which I've had from new. About 18 months ago I had a £700 bill for work to get it through the MOT (mainly welding).

As I know the history of the car and it is very reliable I considered it cheaper to have it put back on the road than look for another car with all the time, expense and uncertainty of doing that.

18 months later I know I made the right decision - it sailed thru the last MOT with no problems even highlighted and only today has a headlight bulb gone -which was probably the original one.

I think any MOT tester can put what they like on the advisory notices as it mentions that the advisory notices are the MOT tester's opinions only and nothing to do with the MOT test or something along those lines.

I am fortunate in that I have a friend who has a body shop next to the MOT test station and particularly a few years ago. The car would be presented for an MOT and then returned with the list of what was wrong which we then fixed. Normally the MOT was issued before on a trust basis.

Nowdays with stricter testing the car has to go back up for the tester to check the work has been done.

My point is it does make life much easier when you come from a fairly close community and can work together just to make things easier for all concerned.

Nahhhhhhhh, definately a change for the worse there,;) ;););)

Was going to PM you about this but couldn’t cos you don’t except PM's.

The change was not though choice exactly I now have dystonia due to a car accident and am unable to work as a mechanic anymore, so had to find a job which was not manual work and I could do in comfort.

Well this ones got a bit heated,

To the OP. You have a car with a years MOT. Use that.

You have a car that today is worth £1000, in a year it will be worth £750?, but only if you spend £800. Do the maths, where would you sooner have that money.

Old cars are only worth/able to be kept on the road/safe if the owners can look after them themselves.

Hi, sorry my friend, I can assure you I meant no offence, I was trying to be smart, note the smilies. Lesson learnt. My only point was that I have been a "blue" collar worker all my life, and am dam pround of of it. I thought you meant you had spanned the gap and joined the ranks of the IT brigade, "what does not talk to the likes of us". I'm sure you know what I mean.

Didn't know I had pms dissabled, wasn't intensional and is somewhat ironic in terms of what I've just posted:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: All the best,

I had a push bike accident last July that finished my physical efforts and forced early retirement so I can assure you that you have my sympathy, I know how it feels.;)

Now, how do I sort that PM thing drrrrrrrr
