Recycled Wine Bottle Crafts

Following on from a fab idea by mary43 I thought I would post a thread on ideas for recycling empty wine bottles to give as gifts...

mary43 came up with the idea of decanting bubble bath into the wine bottles, adding a label and topping with a washed cork.

There are many variations on this and I have come up with a girly idea for my friend who loves rose wine. Decant pink bubble bath mixed with bath glitter into a clear wine bottle, add a front label ( I get these from a seller on Ebay) add a pink tag decorated with sequins and lots of raffia tied around the neck of the bottle, to top the bottle Im going to use a plain cork decorated with beads and ribbon.

If you are really clever and skilled you can drill a hole in the bottom of the bottle, wide enough to thread fairy lights into. Top the bottle with an embellishment of your choice. This makes a stunning stylish decoration for your home.

Make a message in a bottle gift- by printing off love quotes, notes about family or anything really insert into bottle and give to a loved one.

Fill an empty wine bottle with bath salts, add this to a wine bucket (ice bucket) with individual flannels tied with ribbon and a few heart shaped soaps.

Fill with smarties, jelly beans, M&Ms or Nuts as a nice edible gift.

Cool, they are really nice ideas. You could also do chilli oil or flavoured vodkas for gifts - there is a great thread on here somewhere for the vodkas.

I saw them used (upside-down) as light fittings in a bar I was in last week. Looked really funky.

There was also a game I saw years ago which was a bottle filled with coloured wood chippings and small items - the idea was to shake the bottle around until you'd spotted all the items inside (not allowed to open it!).

Hi I wanted to do chilli oil as well but apparently there are health risks! The moisture in fresh chillies and garlic can cause botulism!! Using dried stuff is apparently ok though. Here is where I read about it - there's a safe recipe on there too.

Some good ideas there...............OH just picked out some small bottles for me - the ones that had oil in...............I'm running out of bubble bath.....don't think I've got enough for another for a full size wine bottle but three small ones should be ok.
Looks like everyones having a bottle of bubble bath in our family this year...........lol

Thanks celyn90 I love the idea of that game for parties! Going to give that one a go at the next family do! :j
  • I suppose you could put oil into smaller bottles with chillis, herbs etc but dont ever use it just have it for display??? OH got me a huge bottle of Olive Oil from Sainsburys with an old fashioned label, but I wont open it as I display it in my kitchen.

I was also thinking for a bit of a "saucy" gift- some baby oil could be decanted into those smaller (1 glass) wine bottles, and a little tag and label added with some ribbon in hot pinks, reds and black.

Haven't seen 'one glass' wine bottles.............they'd be perfect for using up the rest of my bubble bath to keep it all in wine bottle theme instead of using the old oil bottles...........mind you, the oil bottles are nice shapes, ones all sort of curvy.
Think someone on the Greenfingered Board mentioned using bottles as edging for the garden, turned upside down and buried right in so just a bit of the bottom showed. If it wasn't on this site it was somewhere else.

Just need an idea now for empty beer cans...............lol OH has quite a few of those as well, plus the little dumpy lager bottles.

  • They sell those mini bottles of wine in M&S, but also thought those alco pop bottles could be used as they are quite small.

Got to travel 20 miles to our nearest M & S and haven't got any alco pop bottles..........can't see I'm likely to have.
Might be enough with the old oil bottles..........there's three of them. One I can't use as the cork fell in and I can't get it out.....................lol

I made a lamp when I was a student using plastic fish on fishing wire suspended in a clear brandy bottle lit from underneath. I don't have a picture unfortunately, but it was quite cool. Hmm... pickled animals... the possiblitites are endless
