  • I am a convert to CM. I have curiously watched his programs, amazed at the difference he has made in every single case. The last one I saw, all he did was look at the dog and the damned thing reverted to it's lower position in the 'pack', causing its owner no further grief from that day onwards!

I have just finished reading his book, as I am keen to help with my dog and her nervous/agressive behaviour. She is extremely territorial and I always blamed her, but whadda you know, the minute I decided to become the 'pack leader' in the home (rather than her) she has changed drastically.

On dog walks, she now walks behind me, instead of dragging me around. A few tugs on the lead occasionally reminds her who is in charge. When we are approached by other dogs, because she feels my confidence, she no longer attempts to protect me with barking and agressive behaviour, but sniffs the other dog amicably. She does not grumble/growl now when asked to move off furniture. She has also become more obedient.

Now I am no professional. But his techniques have helped me achieve a much happier relationship with my dog - for both of us. And for that I am grateful.

  • I cant believe what most of you are saying, I have seen every single CM show and in no way is he being cruel. As for his “touch” it always works when timed right and that’s all it is, a touch. He is in no way hurting the dog.

As for the woman with the fear of spiders you are putting human emotion onto a dog as most people do, you cant deal with a dogs behaviour the same as you would with a human it will fail.

Now to the point made about him holding the dog off his front paws, when you have a dog that is charging towards another dog this is naturally going to happen when you have a dog on a leash, anyone who has had a big breed with this kind of behaviour will know that they do this.

As to pinning the dogs on the ground, has any of you actually owned more than 1 dog? This behaviour I see all the time, they will pin the submissive dog on the ground for a few seconds. I have even seen what looks like the dog is dancing on them they will do as above but then walk up and down over them, its all about dominance. And to the woman who said they only do this when they intend to kill is nonsense, like her quote about the “gun to the head” again with the human emotion. Cesar is in no way putting his whole weight onto the dog.

About making the two dogs meet, he done this to provoke the dogs bad behaviour, how can you treat the behaviour if you haven’t seen it and corrected it. I own 5 dogs all big breeds 2 of which are rottweilers the so called “vicious” breed, using Cesar’s methods they are like big kittens. Cesar is by far the best dog handler I have seen. If you don’t agree with his methods don’t watch the show it’s as simple as that.

The pack leader method works and of coarse it should when it is the way dogs themselves relate to one another, to the person who said he is not his dogs pack leader, that he “trained” his dog to be obedient with positive “training“. What would you call a trainer if you were in any type of class, would you call him leader of the pack. As for his collar, again this does not matter as he says himself if you are in charge of your dog you can walk him with anything.

Ticking Timebombs I have never heard the likes of this, are you trying to say that Daddy or any of the dogs he has helped overcome aggression is only pretending to behave until he gets his chance to explode? Utter nonsense.

If some of you think his methods are cruel I hope to GOD you don’t see something truly cruel like on Animal Cops on Discovery’s Animal Planet.

I love CM. He loves his dogs, you can see that. A lot of these videos paint him in a bad light. It's jealousy. When "it's me or the dog" was on TV Victoria got critizised. Whenever there is something like this on TV everyone gets critized at some point. I don't think he's being cruel at all. Cruel is neglecting a dog, starving a dog, beating a dog, dressing a dog up in silly outfits etc. You do not see anything that suggests he is being cruel to these dogs.

hmm -I havent watched him much, and I have no doubt that he has some understanding of dogs, but prong collars suggest cruelty to me... I have also seen him deliver a swift kick to the ribs at least once.

Did this dog yelp when he kicked it? These dogs do not seem frightened of him when he has finished training them

I've been watchin CM for some time now and i find is methods great.

I think what some people are missing is the fact he's working with dogs that are stressed by things they should not be stressed about, and you cant just sit your dog down on a couch and discuss it's phobeas.

I've seen programs where he has admitted that he alone cannot deal with the dogs issues so he takes the dog to his pack of dogs for help, which they often do by acting as role models.

I have a Staff Cross and i have used his methods including pinning him down (extreme times only) and it works a treat and i can put my hand on my heart and tell you i have never hurt him either.

Please dont forget these are just to stop the dog doing unwanted behaviour. Once you have control of the dog you can then start praising him for his good behaviour. E.g When i 1st started using my paper shredder my dog started barking at it and trying to bite it. I used 'Pssst' and made him sit with me. I stayed relaxed and once he was still i would then start giving him affection. Now when i use it he carries on as if nothing had happened. Had i of not done that then everytime i used it he would get stressed again. This has worked on carry bag issues, door bells etc.

I use a harness on my dog and if he gets over excited with another dog i give him a side TAP with my foot to take his mind off it as shown by CM. Not a swift kick to the ribs as someone described it earlier.

I believe he works with common sense. After all whats wrong with EXERCISE, DISCIPLIN, AFFECTION in that order.

My dog is becoming a very balanced well loveable pet. I say becoming as he's still a bit of a puppy (1 years old) and i thank CM methods for that.

I'm in the CS is brill camp. I don't buy the scared senseless victim stuff. You can tell instantly when a dog has been mistreated and all his dogs look genuinely happy.

I think some other dog trainers get jealous/insecure about their less successful methods and ability.

Wow was thinking the CM thing hadn't cropped up for a while :D
I'm firmly in the Cesar camp :) However - despite my admiration for his methods then I always tell anyone that they shouldn't use any of his methods without first discussing with a professional trainer. Mainly because a lot of people misdiagnose the cause of the dogs problem - not because his methods are "cruel" or "wrong" - but unless you are experienced enough to recognise what is causing the behaviour then you could be doing more harm than good.

Is my dog 100%? Heck no :) She STILL has dog aggression issues BUT we're making slow progress all the time - both due to understanding that WE are the pack leaders and she ought to listen to us... but also with the help of a professional dog trainer here. Whilst her methods are certainly not Cesars, then it's easy to see that the principles are similar. Instead of water or training disks or whatever - Cesar uses touch to correct or snap a dog out of the state it's in. Yes he uses his feet, but he doesn't KICK the dog, he taps it with the heel. I've seen the episode with the shock collar - it was a tool the owner had already used and the dog was putting it's life in extreem danger with it's obsession and this was his reason for using the "shock" collar - which he demonstrated on his own hand first.
The prong collars... usually these are already being used (and often incorrectly!) by the owners... and a lot of the time if they are not working or the dog is not reacting well to it then Cesar slips a cheap leash over the dogs head instead and uses that leaving the prong collar on but not using it.
Anyway... everyone has their own views... there are plenty of training methods I don't like or think are counter productive... and personally I think people dressing small dogs in pink outfits and keeping them in special handbags are FAR more cruel than Cesar (whom I don't think is in the least cruel...).
