With toms, and certainly with peppers, your success outside will be governed by the weather. Last year we lost most of our tomatoes to blight thanks to a cold early summer. That was the first time in many years of growing.

So if things don't go exactly to plan this year, don't assume you've got it all wrong!

By the way, I agree with angelavdavis; a cold frame is much less liable to fly than those mini greenhouse things. I made mine with sheets of secondary double glazing from the tip + some wood that was being thrown away, so it was rather cheap! Works fine.
  • i grow toms and cues in the green house and outside. there is a definate success growing in the green house, however i find most of the time growing cues are a waste of time outside.you really have to have to right conditions, perhaps growing near to a south facing fence or shed with very good soil and water everyday.if you are serious about growing your own and plan to keep it up it would be best to buy a green house
ask on freecycle, you may get lucky!

Start with a plastic greenhouse - you can pick them up for about £15. I kept one in a sheltered position and took it down in summer, it last three seasons (not bad for £5 per year?). Take it inside temporarily if weather forecast suggests high winds.

This will provide your seedlings with protection and train you in the basics.

If you can afford it, go for an aluminium coldframe (about £60-75) as you can get a lot of use out of it - I made myself a set of "shelves" out of a discarded supermarket shelf that I could use for small plants, then removed this when I needed to put larger plants in there to grow them on.
    .

Lidl where selling cold frames for £20 two weeks ago and the two stores I frequent still had some in yesterday and Thursday. They were also selling 2 types of mini-greenhouses which I don't know the price of as I was interested in the coldframe.

Otherwise you can make one as the others suggested or see what people are giving away.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

I think i'm gonna have a go at making one cos there's quite a bit of wood i can use in the garden, then i'll just buy some perspex or plastic sheeting to cover it. might be a cheaper option than buying one at the moment.......thanx for all the advice

The mini 3 story ones with the polythene covers are only £9.99 in Instore atm.

That's good to know, I saw the post about the £3 replacement covers from Wilkinsons. I think I will be looking at these for my tomato plants this year.

I was thinking of buying the cover and building a frame out of wood, but If the instore one looks good enough I might buy it complete

I also have 2 Wyevale garden centres fairly close, so I will also be considering this one for £15 - It's exactly the same size as the 3 tier only 30 cm taller - might be better for my tomato plants to have the taller one.

o dear so it is. Sorry everyone, i thought i was in luck for a cheap greenhouse although none in stock.

Tajna woolworths have got a 4 tier Spear & Jackson one for £14.99 but try and fasten this type somehow as the wind can blow them over. Rough size is Depth is 500mm Width is 700mm Height is 1,600mm. Someone said fasten them with 2 15mm copper pipe clips or 2 fixings and maybe a bungee for the top :j

One thing about the proper frame, is that it comes apart for storage, something your wooden frame could do, but it would be more difficult.

    Hello

I have a small garden. I want to buy a mini 3 or 4 tier greenhouse to grow herbs and maybe some veg, and keep them happy over the winter. I have lots of evil acrobatic slugs in my garden, I am in a constant war to keep them off my plants. I put copper tape around the pots but if the ends hang over the sides they eat the ends, if I put the pot next to a wall they climb up the wall and jump on the plant (I am sure they do this ;) ). A mini greenhouse will also be easier to protect, as well as protection from cold and too much rain.

I would like it to possibly have a hole in the back to fasten it to the wall (as I have heard that they can blow over), or I suppose I can make a hole myself.

My garden gets a lot of sun so I would like to be able to keep it unzipped in the summer. Also I have heard that sometimes the plastic on some can rip.

I have looked online at Gardman and Kingfisher greenhouses but I don't which are best. Any help will be very much appreciated. I am quite a newbie gardener.
