I should try Wicks shimsham, though I don't think you'll find it too different wherever you go.

There's a couple on my allotment site who built a lean-to version of this against their shed. Very good insullating properties but light transmission is a bit iffy, apparently. But they're planning another, bigger one. It just takes a bit of time to collect all the bottles needed!
I'd thought about doing this, but upon reflection, when I use the bottles in the garden as mini cloches, they start to go brittle and fall apart after about two years, you would have to take the whole greenhouse apart to fix it I would have thought?

I've said this elsewhere, but polytunnel polythene has a life of at least 4 years. If you are handy with a hammer + a bit of concete (to make sure it stays fixed to the planet) you can knock up something safe & exactly suited to your site at a reasonable cost. I use tanalised fence posts as uprights, but it's not so important to have treated timber for the rest.

i'm a newbie to growing veg, but i've been reading these threads for a while and feel inspired to give it a go!

i'm going to be planting in containers as i don't have the space in the garden.

I've bought the seeds.....tomato, cucumber, beetroot, carrot, spring onion, pepper, leeks & lettuce

But now i'm not sure if i'll need a greenhouse to grow some of them in, ie the toms, cucumber & peppers. i've only been looking at the plastic ones as space is limited, but i've read so many bad reports about them being flimsy and tearing easily in the wind, i don't know if it'll be worth the expense.

if i don't get one, what sort of thing should i be doing? germinate the seeds indoors, then plant into bigger planters outside? How big should the seedlings be before i can put them outside?

I'm sorry i'm asking so many questions, but i really want this to work

    thanks in advance

Start with a plastic greenhouse - you can pick them up for about £15. I kept one in a sheltered position and took it down in summer, it last three seasons (not bad for £5 per year?). Take it inside temporarily if weather forecast suggests high winds.

This will provide your seedlings with protection and train you in the basics.

If you can afford it, go for an aluminium coldframe (about £60-75) as you can get a lot of use out of it - I made myself a set of "shelves" out of a discarded supermarket shelf that I could use for small plants, then removed this when I needed to put larger plants in there to grow them on.

You don't need a greenhouse to grow tomatoes and cucumbers. Most tomatoes are happy and there are cucumber varieties that don't need a green house.

You can also get a small aluminium greenhouse for about £120 - £150 (one that isn't big enough to stand in, but you can place it up against a wall) Because these are taller, you can place pots with cucumbers planted in them and place a large cane in it to train the plant. It won't produce huge fruit or lots, but you should get 2-3 if you keep it well watered and fed. Personally, if you are limited for space, I would opt for a temporary option you can take down when you are not using it.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
