I bought one of these and I am not too happy with it.
It is connected to my tv via RF out and my cable box is connected to the dvd recorder through the scart IN. The scart OUT goes to the tv so that I can watch tv while making recordings. The 2 problems I have are
    1. When the dvd recorder is powered on and I am watching tv through the normal tv channels I am unable to get teletext up without the scart output from the recorder ghosting in. The only way to get rid of this 'ghosting' is by turning the unit off.

    2. The timer does not work. I set a programme up for recording and then turn the unit off. The word timer appears in the front panel which lead me to think all was well. Unfortunately the time comes and goes but the timer fails to start. There is nothing wrong with the disc as it records ok when I press the record button and the time and date matches up the unit's system time and date, i.e. everything is in the britsh format of dd/mm/yyy and hh/mm.

Has anyone else who has bought this recorder come across these problems and be able to offer a solution?

We have one of the cheap Wharfdale ones that were on offer at Argos a couple of months ago (the ones with built in freeview and a hard drive) and our timer is rubbish too.

When you set it to come on it sometimes starts half an hour later than it should do. I have since read a few reviews mentioning timer probs with Wharfdale models. My husband doesn't want to return it though as we won't be able to get another with a hard drive at the same price (think we paid about £59) so it is something he is prepared to put up with.

We just tend to record manually instead.
  • hi , ive just reserved one for us, just wanted to ask as im no brain box, my uncle has home made videos on big tapes and wants them on dvd, could he use this to transfer them. i mean plug the dvd recorder into the video player ??

    melandtony.
There should be no problem at all copying home made videos from the VCR to the DVD recorder. Hopefully it will have a scart socket on it. Simply connect that to the scart In socket on the DVD recorder, connect the scart out of the DVD recorder to the tv (so that you can see what you are recording) make sure you set the channel on the DVD recorder to the scart socket you have the VCR connected to. Press record on the DVD recorder and Play on the VCR and.......Well that should be it. There would probably be problems trying to copy pre-recorded tapes, though, as these may have some sort of encryption on them. But home made videos should be fine.
    Good luck.

    HOLD ON!!!
You will only need a HDMI cable if his TV has a HDMI socket. If it's not one of the newer LCD/Plasmas, chances are it won't.

You only need scart leads to record from VHS, these are sold at most pound shops.

As tony said, connect VHS player scart socket marked " video out or TV" to the no2 input scart socket on the Dvd recorder.
Use any TV to watch what the recorder is doing via another scart lead from the DVD "TV out" scart the TV. You do not need a HDMI lead to record anything.

Experiment, usually the remote is used to set the recording source for the recorder, at a guess channel 0.

Set the tape going, so you see the tape playing on the TV and press record on the when the tape reaches the point you want to start at.

It does not seem your timer problem is the same as mine(or at least I'm not prepared to wait 30 mins to find out). However I have found out the cause. Whenever I set the timer and choose 'once' for the number of recordings it fails to start. If I set it to daily or weekly it starts bang on time! It's a slight workaround but one that is ok for me as it does not take too long to do. Why it happens is anone's guess.
I still can't figure out the ghosting teletext problem though.
