Manda, if you managed to get Sky+ then this would still be useful to archive progs you wanted to keep, as the Sky+ hard drive recorder soon fills up. There comes a time when you have to delete or record over stuf already recorded with any device that records onto a drive, some things you may want to keep. Just record via the scart in the same wat as you would record to VHS .

The only downside I can see is that the tuner being analogue will be defunct in a few years depending where you live. But for 40 quid it is still good value, depending on your set-up..

Analogue switch-off is Cumbria this year,
Granada, Wales and West Country next year,
    Scotland and West 2010,
Yorkshire, Central and Anglia in 2011,
and lastly in 2012,Meridian, London and S.East, Tyne Tees and Ulster.

I am really thinking about getting one of these now. I don't care even if the sound is mono which reports elsewhere seemed to suggest it's not, that would be perfectly adequate for me.
Also I won't have the problem of not being able to record one channel while watching another when analogue is turned off because I have a digital cable box and an old Ondigital box which picks up freeview. Can anybody see a flaw in this thinking?

If your TV has two scart inputs, you could do this (if it doesn't sound too confusing)

Digital Cable Box to DVD Recorder via scart, then DVD Recorder to TV Via scart.
OnDigital Box to TV Via Scart

So you wouldn't be able to record from the OnDigital box, but could from the Digital Cable box, When you wanted to watch a different channel to that being recorded, you would have to watch it via the OnDigital box... Hope this isn't too confusing!

    I've been Money Tipped!
My friend is having problems setting this up as the manual is a bit confusing.

They have a new HDMI tv, this and a cable box.

Could someone please tell me in laymans terms which scart goes where and i can pass the details on.

She does not have a HDMI lead but has been told she should still be able to connect using a scart, the pic just won't be as clear.

I think she said they get the menu screen up so she asssumes they will be able to play a dvd but hasn't been able to view the sky programmes through it yet.

    Cheers.

The reports are correct, "mono" is listed on the Argos site as this is an option - i.e. you can choose this option to save disc space, stating it like this hardly sells the product well though, "mono option" would be better.

Just in case anyone is thinking of buying one of these, "GET IT BEFORE THEY SELL OUT". Im certainly no techie head, but bought one yesterday for my mom as her video recorder was broken, took 5 mins to set up and 5 mins to explain to my 70 year old mom how to work and took my mom 1 hour today to tell me how good it was and what she had recorded. I guess unless you really understand the difference in these recorders this one is ideal for the price:T :T :T

Hi,I bought one a few days ago,and think it's great too! Only thing to watch is is is deep,so watch your space. I can't hear any noise when operating, which was a complaint on another review.Only thing which is slightly disappointing, and not the fault of machine, is recording from sky plus box is at real time and possibly can't watch any other channel on sky plus.
Apart from that very good, let's hope it keeps going ok?
    Fingers crossed.
  • I'm probably being a bit thick - it has been known!
If I bought this and just transferred already recorded programmes from my Sky+ box, will I be able to use it after the digital switch over to do the same or will I not be able to view progs transferred?
I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break :D

Yes, it will still record and playback via the scart sockets.

After analogue switch off it is only the built in tuners that will not pick up any recognisable signals. The box will then be just a recorder, in the same way a cassette recorder worked. You just have to feed it with video from an external source, i.e.your telly, Freeview , Sky or cable box or even VHS all done via scart leads.

  • Thanks dc.

This looks like a suitable cheap one for me then!
