Its either a problem with the thrust bearing, or a faulty engine mount.
Best not to sit at lights with first gear selected - if you get hit by another car, and rendered unconcious, what do you think will happen to the car? It will drive forward until something stops it. Perhaps a car coming from the other direction....at speed.....
And no doubt it will then crash into a petrol tanker which will roll down an embankment, hit a train which will crash into a school.............
I was trying to get the Op to unwind a bit! And I sit at lights ( for the whole of 30 seconds or so) in DRIVE with my foot on the brake blinding the person behind me, (apparently, cos they're in a small car), and am not, so not botheredGenie

Nothing wrong with holding an auto in D on the brake, but you should really be using the parking brake while stopped in D.
Unless you enjoy blinding people, risking uneven disc surfaces, and the aforementioned instance of losing control....0 -

Since we seem to be playing 'my car is bigger than yours': I said low car, not small car. I particularly notice it in my low-slung sports car, not so much in my daily drive in which I sit higher up. You continue doing it since you enjoy it so much, but I can't see it doing your brake discs or torque converter much good.0 -
the car seems to be fine in nuetral with the clutch up,meaning it only does it when its in gear and the clutch is down, which leads me to think the clutch is slipping.
i never said and the clutch could slip without any load, please read my posts before you try to pick holes in them...work permit granted!0 -
Sorry just to update the noise has NOTHING to do with the cluth... The car can be in neutral or in gear and the noise still occurs. The weird thing is yesterday it was fine and today the noise has come back again.... wonder if its one of the belts....hmmmm"He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,

does it do it only when the engine is cold?
my focus used to have slight rattle from the top end of engine,(guessing the tappets) when cold or when it had been idling for a great length of time.after the head had to come off it and valves were replaced the noise stopped....work permit granted!0 -

Don't think it happens from cold but definately occurs when its been idling for long periods of time esp when I am sitting in the traffic."He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,

Does the noise change if you drive forwards, or in reverse?
Have you opened the bonnet while the noise is present and actually tried to locate it?0 -

No the noise does not change if i drive forwards/ reverse... I have opened the bonnet, sounds as if its coming from the belt but I can't be too sure.
Its more of a rumbling/small vibrating sound that occurs around every 5 secs..normally while the car is idling for long periods of time!"He's a maniac, maniac that's for sure,

no,you have misread Tesla's post.......and maybe encouraged a bit more plate wear to boot.
leave the handbrake ON.....the engine should stall....if it doesn't then the clutch is slipping. No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0
