I ordered an adult (code LDZ) and a childrens lucky dip pack CODE LDY) from the "Bin Ends" section of https://www.thebookpeople.co.uk each cost £4.99 for ten books (kids are age 10 and over) I got some great books for stocking and presents, well known authors although they don't guarantee what you will get. For 50p each book thats brilliant value!
    Rosemary

Rosemary - thanks for this tip. My books came today. I ordered 3 packs of the age 10 and over sets for my daughter, her best friend and my niece, and every book is different. They include some TV books (Buffy and Hollyoaks), which my daughter's friend will love in her set.

I also ordered one of the kids sets and I am also very pleased. There's a Thomas the Tank Engine one, Winnie the Pooh one, plus books by Babette Cole and Helen Oxenbury. I'm sure this set would suit babies (for being read to), early readers (some with only a few words per page) and slightly more advanced readers.

All in all, a great find. Thank you

Murtle - the kids books code is ZPI. It's a set of 10 books and the set I got is suitable for babies up to (I think) about 6-7 if they read the books themselves.

I have to reply to the negative comments regarding Samaritans Purse. I have been sending 2 shoeboxes every year for several years now.

The first article link at the Guardian is so inaccurate that I'm surprised Samaritans Purse didn't make an official complaint.

A list of what you can and can't send is here:_

    http://www.samaritanspurse.uk.com/occ/yes-nos.asp

Yes they are a Christian organisation, but they are completely upfront about it, both here in the UK and where they operate abroad (my husband has seen them operate in Bosnia). The gifts are given to Christians, Muslims and any other religion or atheist/agnostic within the community they are working. Their main aim is to give where there is need. A Christian act during the most important Christian festival - the Mass of Christ. Alot of those participating are Christians as it is promoted through churches, but our local paper always runs articles about it, so reaching the non-christians too. Many people give because it is good to remember those less fortunate than themselves, particularly at this time of year.

Our local Post Office collected over 400 boxes last year, the first year it had been a collection point. They are expecting considerably more this year. Not bad for such a small village.

Don't be put off taking part. You will find that itis nearly always Christian based organisations that do this kind of thing - particularly at Christmas! :)

Hi Plumpud - Thanks for the link. The list of can/can't send is identical to one son brought home from school.

    I don't have a problem with filling a shoebox.

Edited : cos offer I found ended yesterday - Soz folks :-[
  • Went on a stockingfiller hunt on Saturday and found that Woolworths has some great offers. Rather than going in the toys section, try the party section as next to balloons etc. they have loads of partybag fillers. I found 8 maze puzzles for £1.79, keyrings, 6 bubble blowing devices £0.99 and loads of other multipacks. Split them and divide between several children (or several shoeboxes for that matter) and for a small sum you have some great games, and the kids are quiet all day ;D ;D
Three years, six months, three weeks, 13 hours, 48 minutes and 30 seconds. 26011 cigarettes not smoked, saving $11,704.80. Life saved: 12 weeks, 6 days, 7 hours, 35 minutes.
