    Recommendations please.

Looking for a mobile broadband deal for someone who is new to computers and wants to access the internet for email, surfing, MSE sites etc. Large dowloads such as music/video are not of interest so hopefully cheaper packages will be suitable.

He has no PC, laptop or internet connection and wishes to use at various loactions, therefore a mobile broadband contract with free laptop would appear to best suit his needs.

My first impression of a deal that seems appropriate to his needs is vodaphone 3gb/month download with up to £300 off laptop. The store has a laptop for £329 which more than covers computer spec required. Contract is £25/month for 24 months.

Any ideas on better deals/offers, how to improve ££/month, term of contract, etc would be appreciated. As a new PC user he won't want to monitor/check usage so preference would be for provider to deny access if the allowance is used up rather than end up with a bill for going over download limits (I have no idea what, say 1gb or 3gb/month equates to in dowloads because I have unlimited so nothing to check).

    Thanks

    Good Afternoon hundredk,

From what you have mentioned the £25 deal certainly sounds exactly what your friend is looking for! I've checked our latest offers and in my opinion this is the best one.

If you have any questions or would like to go ahead and set it up I can certainly help so just give me a shout!

I currently have the O2 payg dongle but I am thinking of switching to the Orange one for better performance.

Whilst looking into this, I noticed on topcashback.co.uk that there is currently an offer for £40 cashback for Orange Mobile broadband which I believe should include the pay as you go (it mentions "30 day tariffs"), is anyone aware of this - has it been done by anyone?

  • I've just purchased Vodafone Top and Go for £29.00 from Vodafone, comes with £15.00 credit, and the fact that only have to make sure you connect once in 180 days to avoid losing credit is main reason chose this one.

Didn't purchase for home, and it indicated that we were in poor reception area, just got from when we are away. Anyway tried it, and connected to GPRS as best signal, but then I changed preference to 3G only and it connected and worked fine (even though no signal strength?) so pleased I have a back up.

Oh and quidco money too if tracks ok.

Hi this is a question for the vodaphone company rep:

If i have a dongle, which is unlocked, can i just buy a simcard from vodaphone and put it into my dongle for mobile broadband use?......

How much is the minimum top up for mobile broadband, and whats the usages (eg 512mb, 1GB, 3, GB, 5GB?)

does the allowance expire after one month, if no,t how long does it last for?

Are your ip address's given to a group meaning other people may have had the same ip address as me previously?

    thanks...

    Hi Jassi,

At the moment, Vodafone do not offer a SIM-Only, PAYG data bundle. Therefore, you would not be able to purchase the SIM card on it's own. However, there is nothing stopping you from purchasing the mobile broadband sim and dongle and then either -

Selling the dongle and using your unlocked one,
    or,
Using the dongle as a USB stick for external storage.

    I hope this has helped,

    All the best,

    Espi

  • Hi,
first post to the forums after a long time lurking.

I also have a question for the Vodafone rep. I'm interested in getting mobile broadband for occassional use and saw the positive comments about Vodafone and the fact that credit lasts more than 30 days , but when I checked their website all the packages offered appeared to have a 30-day limit. Does this mean that the T&Cs have changed?
Amazon are still offering the dongle described as having no need to top up every 30 days. I'm confused! Is Amazon's description out of date, or would that dongle not have the 30-day limit forever, or only until the next top-up or what?
I'd be grateful for some clarification of this, as I'm unlikely to use 1Gb a month and £15 a pop would work out quite expensive.

The T&C did change but if you can pick up an old one from a reseller then the old T&C are honoured (or so I read)

If you really want this deal I'd suggest you get one now because nobody else does it and Vodafone are unlikley to reintroduce it. Check your coverage carefully first though as all mobile BB is a bit hit and miss away from areas of high population density.

Amazon have an excellent returns policy if it doesn't work out.
  • Thanks kwikbreaks,

have ordered one from Amazon - hope it's one of the old ones. If not I'll return it as 'not as described'.

Have since found some info on Vodafone forums that confirms your advice and describes how to distinguish the old ones from the new 30-day expiry ones. Apparently the new ones have an 'R' after the model number on the back.

Vodafone rep - could you advise on this please?

I am using one of your 1GB PAYG mobile broadband SIMs in an o2 dongle. I've managed to get it to connect. However, i can't get the "Check My Balance" feature to work nor can I send SMS with the Vodafone SMS software. I think I need to enter a different Service Centre number to whatever is the default one.

    Your advice appreciated.
