I'll steer clear of T mobile then. Any thoughts on other offers?

three has 15gb for £15 a month. no free laptop with it but a basic refurb laptop doesnt cost much, i bought one from laptopsdirect.com for my younger brother for £200.
i get quite a decent signal with the broadband which is stronger than my normal landline broadband.

some thing to consider is the aspect of using skype with 3 , skype to mates using skype on a pc is free
  • I'd avoid a contract bundle. PAYG at first, then if you need more airtime and are happy with the signal and speed then (and only then) get a contract.

    Firstly all networks do broadband.

Check the signal where ever this is to be used.
Go with what ever network has the best coverage. Use mobile phones to check signal.

Get a cheapo laptop from Tesco or somewhere. If you want a good laptop get a toshiba satellite pro (from insight - google them)

This website is a pain to use but will tell you what mobile masts there are in an area

For broadband you need UMTS transmitters.

Now that I have entered the 21st century and have a laptop, I am thinking of getting a PAYG dongle so that I can take my baby with me when I go away. I have absolutely no idea how the system works! I would only need it for browsing the net, not downloading films or anything, and it would be for occasional use not regular.

    Any suggestions/recomendations please?

It will have a lot to do with your likely location, as that may affect your options.

Have a look at the Vodafone one - was cheapest on Amazon at the time I bought one.

Very easy to set up and the main advantage of this one is that it does not expire after a set time, you simply top up by purchasing £15 worth of use when required.

Do not buy T-Mobile whatever you do.

My Review of T-Mobile Mobile Broadband

    - The speed is extremely slow. The advertised speed was 1Mbps but the fatest I reached was 0.1Mbps (100Kbps) and the average was speed was 0.01Mbps (10Kbps). Regardless of location. It took a matter of minutes to load a page. A T-Mobile rep. told me he had seldom heard of anyone going above 0.2Mbps (200Kbps)

    - Carphone Warehouse advised me I would have good coverage at my address. They will not tell you that no coverage is guarenteed at any location.

    - T-Mobile will not terminate your contract if the device stops working completely.

    - T-Mobile will take months doing tests on the device and even when they cannot diagnose or repair the problem they will continue to charge you for the service.

-T-Mobile will never call you back when they promise. They will pass you from one person to another withought explaining your circumstances. They do not care whether you recive a satisfactory service or not and only care that you pay the bill.

    - In my experience, T-Mobile representatives are trained to use delay tactics to make frustrate you into submission where they cannot resolve your problem.

    - If you stop paying for the Broadband after it has stopped working and you also have a T-Mobile phone they will disconnect your phone, regardless of whether you have paid the phone account. They will continue to charge you for your phone and broadband whilst it is disconnected. They will then refer to baliffs
Couldn't agree more, Kamal! T-Mobile's connectivity borders on the un-usable a lot of the time when you can only get a 2G (GPRS - 56KB) signal - one evening it took over 14 minutes just to download their home page. I believe they have taken on far more customers than their equipment can cope with, and I would say their geographic coverage is very inferior to Orange, with whom I have my mobile phone. When I complained and asked to cancel my contract, the rep put up some very obstructive denials, asked me to supply an unreasonable number of examples to justify my complaints and it was obvious they weren't going to budge. My opinion - try a different provider!

I have Vodafone PAYG and it is pretty good. The data allowance lasts for ages;)

Have found the Vodafone broadband sims with 1gb on ebay starting at £6.99. If they go close to that price then that's cheaper than topping up! Or have I missed something? I wonder where they're getting the sims from.
