Has anyone tried using Skype - complete with camera - using a mobile broadband connection?

My parents don't have/need broadband, but we would like to talkto/see relatives in Canada.

My flatmate has tried using Skype with a T-Mobile dongle/connection and it just does not work. (He does not even have a webcam on his laptop, so on his side it would be audio only (the other side had webcam))

The answer to my question may be extremely helpful for everyone wanting to limit their bandwidth usage.

There used to be software that would, instead of loading the image fully or not loading it at all, download the image in a limited way. So it would still display the image but it would not download all the data, making it both faster and reducing the bandwidth used. This was often used back in the day of 56k dial-up but I have searched the net and can't find any such software anymore. Anyone have any pointers to it?

Also, it is worth installing an adblocker so ads are not downloaded at all, like adblock plus addon for firefox!

In opera you can choose no image or cached images which can be very handy on image heavy websites. It works on utube too which is handy when you just want to look at a quick clip without having loads of others shown down the sides.
Opera 10 beta also has a think called turbo that reduces picture quality a bit and saves some of the bandwidth,it cant be used on all sites though as it effects log in .
I have two dongles and have noticed that if you look in your network connections, then click on the dongle connection to view properties, you can see in configuration an option to use modem compression, this reduces the picture quality somewhat but sounds like the same sort of idea as you have mentioned.
I havent tried it on my three dongle yet but it definitely works on the BT dongle.

So many deals, and so many conditions, im a bit lost. can anyone tell me what the best deal is?

i know you can get a three dongle for £4.99, but what about the provider? who can give me the most for the least? i already get 500mb from orange on my phone contract but my phone is pretty useless for internet usage.

    budget: £10/month, no contract.
  • I bought a prepaid 3g dongle with a prepaid 24gb allowance for approx. £120. I expect it to last for 2 years as I do not download music and films or play games.

No contracts or direct debits or bank details, no top-ups .... I am very happy with my deal.

seems like £10/month to me, but then i dont fancy paying £120 upfront

great site for looking at the options and pros/cons
  • sorry, meant to add, most people will want you to commit to a contract, of at least 12 months, but good news is prices have come down quite a bit. Watch out for apparently cheaper deal which limit your usage then hammer you if you go even slightly over.
