Looking at your link dn105, I think the time you've quoted refers to the 200metres race. I have a time of 8 minutes 18.06 seconds - sorry don't know where I got it from now!

from the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebecca_Adlington
"Adlington set a new British, Commonwealth, European and Olympic record of 8:18.06 in the preliminary heats of the women's 800 metre freestyle on 14 August 2008. She went on to win the 800m Olympic freestyle final on 16 August2008 in a world record time of 8:14.10, her second gold of the tournament, a full six seconds ahead of the silver medalist, and two seconds ahead of the former world record which had been set by Janet Evans when Adlington was 6 months old. At the time, this was swimming's longest standing world record.[9]0 -

There's no way it would take an Olympic swimmer 8 minutes or more to do a 200 metre race.
I looked up my answers independently from the answers on here and have agreed with the general consensus. I think it's as dnl05 has answered.
