I'm going to ring and try to get it lowered as people seem to be having joy doing that.
I'm guessing they must be prepared for the barrage of complaints though?
I've always been a good payer, never missed/late except for this month when it went through a day late ahhh!!! Hoping that doesn't work against me...

  • Thanks so much all of you for this information. I've got 3 credit cards, Virgin, Barclaycard and Halifax. I did have Egg as well until a few months ago when I decided to close the account as I hadn't used it for ages. I'm now really glad I did.

In the past I've found Virgin great for 0% transfers, but I'm really glad my eyes are now open to what they are really like. It's so easy to be lured into a false sense of security.

This is now definitely my next targeted card to get rid of.

Ah I've not managed to get through on the phone line yet it's taking ages to get through!
For anyone who needs it I'm ringing the Customer Loyalty Dept for MBNA as advised by VC customer services - 0800 783 1116

    I'm so annoyed!
    I'll keep trying anyway.

Has everyone managed to get their rate lowered that has called up? I'm worried they won't lower mine and I can't get more credit to b/t.

  • I guess we can stop flying virgin, stop buying from virgin and stop getting virgin wines! Then, we could start telling our MP's that if they are not seen to be assisting in these unfair markets we can vote them out!

Incredible that Northern Rock gets £25billion of our money but we still don't get any protection as consumers on unfair practices such as APR hiking!

Jeeps, wish I had stayed in NZ

There's too many people voting blindly for coloured rosettes for change ever to hit this country. They will eventually stop voting for coloured rosettes, but I don't know when, and I have only a vague concept of why.

    It's more like £100 billion.

They're no better. In any deficit government country - the government are the banking system, and the banking system is the government.

OMG  been trying to get through on the phone for ages, then finally get through to someone and they won't do anything!!

I said I wasn't happy with it and he just said that 34.9% is the lowest rate they can offer me. Even more annoying when I know from the discussions on these forums that some people have called and got their apr lowered.

I've had this card for a couple of years only had one problem this month when a payment went through a day late - do you think this is why they are not willing to budge? Or do they know that I won't be able to get credit elsewhere so I'm stuck with it?

So my rate has gone from 17.9% to 34.9% with less than a month's notice - how is this fair?

Plus with the min payment going up I don't really know what's going to happen with that I'm not sure how to work out what it's going to be.

I really hate the casual tone of the letter aswell - heading "Your interest rate is going up"
Then it starts "just to let you know" what a ridiculous way to start a letter like this!!!

I really don't know what to do now - is it worth sending a letter to try and appeal? Don't think they are going to budge are they?

Any chance you can try and get the Tesco clubcard credit card that has a 13 month 0% free period on balance transfers? I casually did an application online at lunchtime and got accepted, so bye bye MBNA credit card. I have £1k to pay off a card and was going to throw it on MBNA, but I think I'll tart the balance to the tesco one and throw the £1k on my Capital One instead.

MBNA... I will never touch them with a barge pole again. I am guessing the hike of interest payments and upping of minimum payments is due to the mass credit problems in the US.. after all they are an american company. What they are doing is disgraceful. Mine wasn't as bad, my interest upped to 21.9% but for some bizarre reason I had two letters.. one saying about the interest and minimum payment and another 'advising' me that my payment date will be changed too.. erm, why???

Not sure if I could get the Tesco card, v good b/t deal though.
I last tried for a loan end December and was rejected, I think because I had been over my overdraft limit in December and things had all gone horribly wrong!
I could maybe risk trying to apply for the tesco card or I might wait a few months and hopefully being better organised and making a dent on my overdraft will mean I can get more credit. Unless I got refused because I'm already committed to a large amount of credit in that case I'm screwed.

I've got a review next week at the bank so see if they have any ideas.

    So annoyed I hate MBNA!!

They'll have a number of ideas. Loan, loan, LOAN, LOan, LoAn, and lOaN.
