Does anyone know if this applies to balance transfers?? Just that my mum applied for one to transfer a balance (obviously to pay a debt off!) and this would be disastrous if they hiked the interest up. She has had the card less than a month, she hasnt had a letter (yet!) But dont know whether she should expect one??

It doesnt apply to BT's, only contract rates - BT will be a promo rate.

I would suggest all to phone the Customer Loyalty Dept (dont know the direct number sorry) and ask to discuss it. 99 times out of 100 it can be lowered. they wont lower it to your previous rate, but the rise might only end up being 2% in some cases.

I know customer service no is 0800 062 062 - customer loyalty is only open 9-5 though AFAIK (it used to be)
No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

Sounds dreadful - have you tried ringing and telling them you'll change cards (even though you can't)

Well I've got this number for the "customer loyalty department" not sure how to approach it yet. If I say I am going to transfer it is a total bluff as I can't get any more credit - will they know I can't more credit though from my score??

I'm not sure whether we need to argue it or not, we have £4k on the card but it's 0% until September...hmm decisions.

That's definitely a worse case scenario but I can definitely see signs of it happening already.

The store chain I work for is pushing so hard for store cards at the moment, you just can't convince customers to get them (even though, they are actually better than most for perks and lower interest).

  • Just come on-line and caught up with this thread - what a shock - first thought - what would MSE Martin say about this - surely it cannot be legal - it's outrageous!

  • they did the same to me about 7mths ago and it convinced me to go on a dmp as I could not possibly pay the minimum anymore, sky card did the same, shame for them really in my case as now they get very low payments and gain no interest at all, I did not want to go on a dmp but they forced my hand and I had no choice, they are mongerals.
  • I'm just waiting for my statement - it's scary isn't it. I have applied for another card which I hope will be successful so that I can transfer my balance.

thank god i got rid of my mbna card, i hated them for the short time i was with them, they bought my bos card and messed up the transfer over to their system causing me to go over megga amounts and not once did they take the extra back as you would expect by adding it to the minimum payment the next month, they just wanted to keep charging me £12 a month for being over the limit.

    That's interesting...

I read somewhere that when banks refuse to lend, it becomes a recession. When people refuse to borrow, then it becomes a depression.

    That'll not be fun...
