Thanks to the user who posted the last post, goes to show that this scheme does work, myabe "strapped" you just had a bad experience with it or you did mis-lead the company.
All in all i dnt knw many people who have done this but the ones who have seem to have had no problems.0 -
We got a 75% grant towards cavity wall insulation about three years ago, neither myself nor my partner are on benifits and we both (at the time) were earning over £14k, so I don't know why you're having problems.
Have you tried speaking to another company?
Can i ask what company you used and how much did it cost? Also do you noticed a difference in heating bills?0 -
Many people who apply for these grants are on low incomes, some in fuel poverty that means paying 10% of there disposable income just on fuel.
Perhaps you would prefer that you live on a low income just to benefit from this grant.Good for you! I'll continue to work, pay increasingly larger fuel bills as well as paying my taxes so that you can have benefits so that you "will save quite a bit of money on my bills a year and increase value on your home".
Oh, and I'll have to pay the full cost of insulating my home.0 -
ye thats a good point, has anyone got any figures on how much they have saved by having there home insulated, as i havent had mine done over a year yet i cant really quote any annual figures.
Responses will be greatly appreciated.0 -
Anyone?
Would be really intresting to know some kind of figures?0 -
Only had the loft done (no cavity walls, only moved in Feb 07) but my house is much warmer than this time last year, and I do monitor my bills. Last March was the highest bill for energy I have every had, compare that bill in March which was only for 6 weeks to other bills in mid winter Nov, Dec and Jan (not done Feb yet, due to do the readings on 25th) which are billed 4 weekly and even when you take that into account its still a lot less than in March 07 when you average the days out. Mind you at the time I was with BG say no more about them, and now with SP0

The cavity was done on my house in summer, so it was hard to judge the difference, but my brothers was done in winter and he had to immediately reduce the thermostat by 2-3C (3 B semi).
It cost me £150 (4 bed detached) about 1.5 year ago to do it, arranged through Powergen. It's best to see what deals your own supplier has on first, it varies region-to-region but there appears to still be plenty of deals around.0 -

When you're not moving and improve the energy efficiency of your home I agree there is no substitute for checking your own bills to see if you've made a saving after you take account of price differences.
However, if you're buying its a different story. Even if the vendor is happy to let you see their bills so you have an idea of what the costs are of living there, their bills won't necessarily reflect what you will pay e.g. different supplier, different heating pattern, property occupied at different times, different idea of what temperature you prefer.
The EPC (currently in the HIP) addresses this by using standard occupancy. Standard occupancy is applied to every EPC produced in the country and makes certain assumptions e.g heating on 8 hours per day. The EPC may well not reflect how you the buyer will use the house but it enables the buyer to directly compare properties moreso than comparing actual bills paid by vendors who use the properties differently.
In terms of cost savings according to recommendations the EPC estimates this too - the estimated amount of money saved per year is listed with each recommendation, again this is calculated using standard occupancy but due to the fact we are really getting into Peak Oil territory now (as a previous poster said) the EPC figures are becoming increasingly conservative as fossil fuel prices go north.
As for grant funding there are some excellent sources listed on this thread but the list is by no means exhausted. People who are not on any benefits may find their local council can provide insulation etc at discounted rates but some improvements attract no help at all. E.g. there are no grants available to insulate the internal/external sides of solid brick Victorian properties so those people without cavity walls cannot receive funding. The energy assessment community is applying pressure to the grant source decision makers to include solid wall insulation.
All prospective tenants and people moving into council housing will be able to benefit from this EPC information from October 2008.Happy to help with HIPs and EPCs0 -
