There are lots of other places on these forums where information is swapped. It just seems easier to say 'no' on this particular thread and I haven't really underastood why. I feel sad as I have no chance of a holiday now. I haven't been able to afford a holiday for the last 5 years. I think on this thread the rules are being applied very heavily. The owners of this website are not at any risk if people privately email each other and make their own arrangements.

Well then why not exchange email addresses privately, and then leave this thread to a general discussion. You know they'll only lock the thread if not, and that will not help anyone? x

Just to add to the discussion, you would not be covered by your home insurance if something were to happen. You would need to take out a holiday let type of cover, and this could be quite expensive.

But why are people being so NEGATIVE about this?

OK, to discuss INSURANCE, I copy from the previous page a post from KB36 who has house swapped previously and got the insurance 'sorted':-

Insurance wise - my accidental cover is invalid when swappers are in my house and if something goes missing and there is no sign of forced entry then we are not covered. It varies from insurer to insurer though but do check it out. I just make a phone call before every swap and it's sorted!

I believe that 'holiday let' type of insurance is unecessary. My insurer Esure has never stated a need for this. Also if you have any sort of travel insurance there is usually an amount of cover for personal liability which would cover you in the other person's home. It may differ from insurer to insurer so CHECK. I can only speak about my experience.

Asset77 - check out the www.knowyourtrade.com that I mentioned in an earlier post (nothing to do with me - honest!) and look for the always free list of home exchange clubs, sign up with the one(s) you like the look of and you can go on holiday;)
  • No harm in discussing it.

Any further exchange of personal info can be done outside this site.

the discussion was more interesting when we had little injections of 'I live in.........' and 'its got...............' but those posts were VERY SWIFTLY removed and somehow its taken all the life out of it! Like looking at a holiday brochure with no pictures! I wonder if we are 'allowed' to add pictures to our discussion? I have a few but don't have the technical knowledge to add a picture to posts......

Hi asset77 - if you're unsure about how to post a picture, look over sra's guide which will explain how it's done :)

I think it's a great idea, just a shame that it isn't allowed to be discussed in too much detail on here at all although I can see why the site has to be cautious. The website that was posted for people doing similar might be a better idea - maybe there would be a way of identifying ourselves on there as MSE'rs (haven't looked at it so can't say for sure!). Or maybe someone techie could come up with a website that we could all refer to - would that be allowed I wonder? I'd give it a go myself as a project but just never got the time!

Personally, I wouldn't be planning on doing it this year as baby due imminently, we're moving house imminently (nobody in their right mind would want to stay in our new one in the state it's in!), and we've already booked a couple of Sun holidays for later in the year which cost next to nothing but I'd probably be up for it in the future as it sounds like a great idea. The other problem is that I don't think many people would be interested in a holiday in the Doncaster area - tell me if I'm wrong!

Don't give up though Asset - it is a great idea, and I'm sure that the fact it isn't allowed in it's crudest form on here wouldn't have to put a stop to it altogether.

Unfortunately I'd be too embarrassed to rent out my fabulous home - what with the floor to ceiling book-shelf of pornography indexed according to marks out of ten,the walk-in wine cellar and the hundreds of photographs of me oiled up in a spangly thong carefully positioned around the swimming pool area.
Plus, this part of Marbella can be a bit choosy about the sort of people who rent property and Marie Curie charity shop clothes-wearing tightwads might feel out of place.
But I do think it's an idea worth pursuing.
    Wahaay !
