Ryanair's baggage policy
Cabin Baggage Allowance
Each passenger (excluding infants) is permitted to carry one piece of cabin baggage on board (free of charge). It should weigh no more than 10kg and not exceed the maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Due to security restrictions - certain items cannot be carried in cabin baggage - click here for details. For the safety and convenience of all passengers, cabin baggage must fit underneath the seat or in the overhead compartment.
Argos description of item
Size (H)50, (W)38.5, (D)17.5cm / (H)20, (W)15, (D)7in
So yes, providing you don't fill it to weigh more than 10 kg (and it hasn't got liquids over 100mls in) then it will be fine for cabin baggage.Dani X

That's correct, but you might like to consider this:
I spent ages looking for a trolly case to use as hand luggage on city breaks.
Although a lot of the budget airlines specify the same dimensions as d4n13773 has confirmed for RyanAir, some airlines are smaller.
Also, the retractable handle takes up space in the case and adds to the weight.
I eventually decided to use rucksacks that we already had which are within the specified dimensions and weigh practically nothing empty.

Just bought a case 55 x 38 x 18 for hand baggage on a ryanair flight and am now worried as these measurements are for the case ony and do not include the wheels. Is this a problem? I cannot understand from their webiste if the measurements are case only? how strict are they? I have never taken hand luggage only before and don't want to get to the airport and have to check the bag in. All advise gratefully received.0

If you do a forum search for 'Ryanair hand luggage' this subject has been discussed many times before.0

im sure you would have no problem on that size, my maximum measurements case for ryanair never gets a second look by gate staff or security
remember though soft sided cases can balloon out when full like that argos one, online check in is always handy because the most vigilant person who could see your case on the check in desk does not see it.
on another matter lets hope questions still get asked instead of doing a "search" because you never know we all could learn something new , tomorrow is a new day and things change!!0 -

If I thought that Ryanair's hand baggage policy had recently changed or that the ins-and-outs of what is and isn't suitable for hand luggage, do wheels count, do bulging suitcases count etc. hadn't already been discussed at length recently then I wouldn't have suggested a forum search

I have been on a few flights now with Ryanair and am always amazed at what gets designated as hand luggage. Last time I flew from Stockholm someone had a large rucksack (I was surprised it actually fitted in overhead lockers) and others have larger cases than the designated measurements and I am sure therefore overweight, also noticed quite a few ladies having two bags (case and handbag) and no one seems to bat an eyelid.0

well done incapuppy i didnt know you knew all the ins and outs of ryanair hand luggage
and it seems you know all the ins and outs on countless other subjects judging by your do a search comment on your post history
the original poster might want some tips, other pointers for better cases, better deals, perhaps you dont know everything and your help is pointing them to a tedious search through endless unrelated posts and can appear rude as if the question should not be asked0 -

1. Yes, I believe that I am now quite knowledgeable on the subject of Ryanair hand luggage - having taken the time to read the many fairly recent threads about the subject as they developed.
3. I don't profess to be an expert on anything, however I do read a lot of the posts on here most days which means that a. I learn a lot, and b. I believe it qualifies me fairly well to be able to point out if a subject has been covered recently and if that information is to be found quite easily by doing a forum search.
2. You must really be at a loose end if you have taken the trouble to read right back through my post history to determine how frequently I suggest people do a forum search. If you would like to be my stalker can you please submit the necessary application in triplicate by post to arrive by close of business on Friday.
I don't see anything wrong in advising people that a subject has been covered previously. Perhaps I can refer you to part of the sticky thread at the top of this page entitled 'Welcome to the Travel Board - please read before posting'

You've only got 10 kilos to play with so a suitcase is out, even the smallest weigh a couple of kilos. Having just returned from Berlin with Ryanair, I witnessed several agruments between travellers with oddshaped rucsacs and check in staff.
I'd go for a holdall similar to those used buy offshore workers, very tough (made from tarpauline) and very light too. Northface make expensive versions of these. But the North Sea workers bag of choice comes from a company called Montrose Rope and Sail. http://www.montroseropeandsail.co.uk/
I've used these for years, excellent kit.Eckieboy
