  • I've had three Punto's over the years. First one was a brand new ELX 16v 3 door in September 2000. Was brilliant. Silly electric steering motor failed a few times tho so beware as it aint cheap - luckily mine was under warranty. Also the handbreak cables come off underneath. My most recent one was faultless! Appart from the usual check straps coming loose, but thats diy stuff.

    Try and get one with the stereo amp in the boot as it makes a massive difference!!

    but I do agree with post #4 though... My money would go on something else at that age!

    KA perhaps or Corsa...
  • a garage doesnt mot the car until someone is interested so they get 12 months mot, thanks for all you views but i found a fiat forum yesterday and asked on there and had possitive comments about fiat they dont rust anymore which is good and not one of the thousands of people on that site has had problems with electrics, so i guess there just like any car around they all have problems.
  • Ehm and you don't think folk on a FIAT site will be ever so slightly biased :confused:

    They are not " just like any car around "..they are not like Honda's, Nissans, Mazda's for instance.

    You have obviously decided to buy one despite the overwhelming advice on here not to, so the best of luck with it.:rolleyes:

    FIAT= Fix It Again Tomorrow

    I used to drive a Fiat Punto and had endless problems with it. Head gasket replacement,new cambelt,faulty wiper motor and dodgy electrics and that was just the start..by the way the mileage was about 40K.

    Will never drive a Fiat again!

    DO NOT BUY A FIAT PUNTO!!!!!!!! It will spend more time in the garage than on the road!! Not to mention the cost!

    That was my experience word for word. The head gasket problem is widely recognised yet Fiat are not interested. My rear wiper was a little temperamental as well, and the electrics would develop repeated faults.

    I dropped on with the Clio, it had only done just over 16,000 miles when I bought it last year, it belonged to an old lady who toddled between home and Tesco's and that was all. A few people have done the usual sucking air through the teeth when I say Renault, but I think its a fabulous little car for the money.

    I have the 1.4 RT, nice spec to it with full electrics, and as you say its very nippy and good on petrol as well.

    I did notice after the punto had gone to the great scrapyard in the sky that there were a lot of Punto's on the market, and all seemed to be just under the magical mileage for the head gaskets to blow. Seems like most owners are aware of the problem and offload the car before it happens.
