W580i

Can someone help me with a couple of things please...
I bought my w580i in Aug last year but it broke and I just had a new (pink) 1 sent to me through the insurance.
The old memory stick is 512mb and the new 1 is 1.0gb now this means nothing to me but if the new 1 is better to use is there any way I can move everything from the old 1 to the new 1 ?
My inbox and sent msgs were just saved on the old phone. Is there a way I can get it all to my new phone ?
Theres a new memory stick pro duo but I dont think it goes in the phone... am I right ?
There is a few trivial things different with the new phone, like theres no "light" option, only 2 themes and a few other little things, is there someway I can download or something these things to the new phone ?

Also do I have to phone my insurance about the new phone IMEI number or is it covered with my old phone ?

thanks for help in advance. :D

  • Hi hcar,

I used to have the grey W580i, which I thought was a great phone. So, your replacement phone came with a 1Gb memory stick (M2 card, right? It's the little black chip-type thing), which means you now have double the storage space on your phone. You say your old phone broke; is it still useable at all? If it is, you should be able to transfer your phone's content onto the M2 card, then put that in your new one and transfer it back across (or keep it there, it's up to you).

I'm not sure about saving your messages - I think it is possible - but you can definitely save your contacts onto the memory card and transfer them across to the new phone ( Contacts > Settings > Advanced > Copy all to memory card ).

The memory stick pro duo will not fit in your phone; it only accepts M2 cards. These used to be expensive, but the cost is coming down. I think the largest size at the moment is 4Gb, but I could be wrong, it might be 8Gb now!

As for the themes and lights option, that's because your phone is branded. Networks like to remove options on some phones when they install their own version of the phone's software. To get the extra themes and options back, you would need to 'de-brand' your phone, which is a thread in its own right! I did that with my Orange-branded W580. After de-branding, I had the generic Sony Ericsson software installed, along with all themes and options.

I'm not sure about the insurance. Would they not have a record already of the IMEI of the phone they sent to you? Give 'em a call and check. :)

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for helping shane, so if I put the new memory stick thing (:)) in my old phone it will copy my contacts and my music, pics etc ? Old phone is still just about usable !

I think the de-branding thing may just be too over my head to do so will have to be happy with what I got.

    Thanks :D

  • The easiest way to transfer your content across is on your PC using a memory card reader.

    - Put the old M2 into the reader and plug into your PC; it will show up as an external HD.

    - Drag the items onto your desktop or a folder on your desktop.

    - Remove card

    - Insert new card into reader / PC

    - Drag files from desktop onto new card, in the same folders as they were on the original card

It can be done on the phones, but it's slower. It's simply a case of selecting files & folders by 'marking' them, and selecting copy/move to... and choosing the memory card. :)

If you use a card reader, yes it will. I have a Mac, and that's what I did! The only problem, as I'm sure you are aware, is that Mac OS X puts lots of hidden DS_Store files, and files that begin with ._ You then have to delete them manually- they show up on the phone as unknown files. Harmless, but annoying!

But its the same phone so I thought I would use this post.

Someone is texting me on the phone, sometimes its blank, some are double texts, none of them make sense, I have text the number back saying I dont know who it was and they have the wrong number but they are still texting, is there a way I can block the number on my w580i so the person cant send any more ?

No you can't block people sending you texts- I had the same problem, 80 texts in one night, I had to turn it off at 3am cos it was freaking me out. However, I'm with Virgin and phoned them up, and they sent a message to the person telling them to stop it or face penalties, and the texts stopped straight away. Other than that, worst case scenario change your sim card, all the networks are giving them away free on the net these days. Not sure how it works on contract, phone your provider and they'll tell you what steps they can take to stop the texts.
As for debranding a w580i it's actually really simple, I did mine and ended up with flash menus that vibrate, and more themes, and all the 02 rubbish removed, all you need is a couple of free apps and the data cable that came with the phone. There's a thread on here somewhere explaining in great detail how to do it and also over on Howardforums (a mobile phone forum)
Fr. Stack: While you were out, I got the keys to your car. And drove it into a big wall. And if you don't like it, tough. I've had my fun, and that's all that matters.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Changing the subject slightly - I'm just about to get (probably) a W580i but there are loads of reports of problems with buttons cracking etc.

Are there any good reports of the phone? It looks great and I want one but all the problems are putting me off. Please can anyone who has one let me know how they are getting on?

Is it really as problematic as the web reports or do the majority of you have no problems?
