received parcel for someone else

This morning I was in a rush to get to work and got a knock at the door from a home delivery driver. Driver was frankly rude and virtually dropped a large heavy parcel partly across my doorstep whilst talking on his mobile phone.I told him to be careful as it was a dinner service I had ordered and he just thrust an automatic signing thing at me to sign and asked me for my name.I spelt it a couple of times but he got bored at having to interrupt his phone conversation and put in a strangely abbreivated version of it.I did however sign my real name.

I couldn't move the parcel so a neighbour came and helped me carry it into the house. It was at that point we spotted the address label and realised it wasn't for me. The address is similar for instance I live at say 13 money Avenue and this parcel was for 13 money road..but the post code is different and the name is completely wrong.

I opened the despatch note to get a telephone number and called the 0870 number for customer serices. They kept me waiting and when I did get hold a real person they said their system was playing up and told me to call back.I called back later this afternoon and was told the same thing. I was a bit cross at this point as the packing note says it is finest Italian food or wine direct from Italy and I am concerned there could be food in the parcel that might be going off (I haven't opened the parcel). They then suggested I might like to deliver the parcel myself, or maybe try and find the customer and give them a call..I have tried to track down the addressee but there is nothing on yell.com in that name. I insisted that they call me back today when their system was OK,but I have heard nothing.

What on earth do I do now..should I risk opening a parcel that is not mine to see whether it is food and likely to go off. Should I just leave it on the floor in the hall as a massive doorstop or what?

Obviously I will try customer services again tomorrow but I am getting a bit cross that they don't seem to care about this parcel, what else should I be doing to make them understand that they need to collect it and get it to the correct person?

Personally I'd call the company that sent the parcel, explain what has happened and the problems you have had with the courier and they may send someone to finish the job. Afterall, its their customer who will be complaining about not receiving their food.

You may even get a bottle of finest italian for your honesty :D

Ahhh, I thought you were calling the home delivery network!

I wouldnt chase them in that case, I'd call the HD Network, tell them the parcel is there and leave it at that. I certainly wouldnt deliver it for them, especially if its heavy!

Tears, How do you know it's HDNL, other than their trademark delivery style?

If itwas delivered by HDNL Soolin should ring their local depot and tell them she is charging them £25 per day to store their parcel :-)

argh, gits, ring them once, tell them to get a pen and a paper take the details and make a note of them and enter it once the system is running or ring you back then, if they decline tell them fine but im notifying you now the goods are not my responsibility and will be left in the front garden, they can collect if they wish otherwise the local thieves can take it (hopefully spring them into action)

its not your responsibility to cover up their incompetence, the most you should have to do is inform them,
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D

Lorian, The invoice states delivery by Home delivery network and It was badly written on the side of the van as well.

steveo3002, I can't track down a telephone number for the addressee and I certainly don't want to have to try and get this into the car and drive round to the real buyer, assuming of course it isn't too away, on the off chance the buyer is in. I would also be worried that if the sending company did ever get back to me I would have no proof that I had actually delivered it.

I think I will give it one more try on the phones tomorrow and then maybe write to the company and tell them I have a parcel here if they want to collect it,I'll leave it in the garage until then.

reehsetin, I have been trying that..they are really so off hand I could scream. It is like talking to a brick wall. I can almost feel them shrugging their shoulders at me and thinking 'so?'

I will give them one more try tomorrow and do just as you suggest maybe even follow it up with a snail mail letter.

    Thank you

    Soolin,

You will be able to get a non 0870 number for your LOCAL hdnl network depot on saynoto0870.

I've had to ring my local depot " a few times" when they have screwed up deliveries. Do ring the depot not head office for the most help.
