Don't worry about it - I will let you boys battle it out!! lol

Try not to get so het up about these things as they don't really matter, I'm sure we all have better things to worry about than some silly post written by a newbie!!(me).

  • They had them in the Keighley store yesterday, for anyone that's interested.

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know where I can get 40w equivalent low energy bulbs that are suitable for use with timers? All the ones I've ever seen say they cannot be used with timers or dimmer switches

    @minerva 69
I cant see a problem with using any bulb with a timer. All a timer does is restrict the flow of leccy until a certain point is reached and vice versa when it needs to be turned off. I wouldnt use them on a dimmer tho.

4 for a £1 in my local Morrisons, Philips brand.
I think Sainsbury's shoppers have a vision problem (as well as an arithmetical one) ;)

If the timer has a mechanical switch as opposed to the newer electronic ones, then there should be no problems with controlling the lamp via a timer. The warnings are for the problems of electronic switching, mainly with dimmer switches, some lamps will work others will not, for 29p why not try one, it should not damage the timer, just light or not.

I'm thinking about solar panels...once we've got over the financial hit of the new condensing combi boiler and the cavity wall insullation.

However I'm prepared to get excited about energy saving lightbulbs as well, but I want the stronger ones that are equivalent to 100w bulbs. Both OH and I have deteriorating close distance vision (old age!!!) and need all the light we can get for tasks. Are the Sainsbury ones 60w equivalent, does anyone know?

  • I got some of the BOGOF low energy lamps from Tesco at the weekend (the Tesco branded ones) and they are very good. The only very slight moan is that, because they are cheap, they take a second or so to come on. This might sound trivial I suppose but it means that every time I go to the loo I'm ready to go before the light comes on.

Anyway, the cheaper ones, in my experience, do not last as long as the slightly more expensive ones, though the branded ones are now a lot cheaper than they were a few years ago (and they do come on instantly  ).

Whether the amount of time they last outways the extra cost, I haven't worked it out, but it's something to bare in mind.

Also, I work for a company that sells, amongst many other things, light bulbs and we stopped selling incandescent bulbs last year. Hopefully other high street and online retailers will soon follow suit.

I have no wish to start an argument with you again. We had an discussion before about the fact that you and your friends go around thanking each other for every post so that your thanks tally is grossly inflated, i think it worked out about 20 thanks per post if i remember rightly. Then have all bells and whistles when someone reaches a certain landmark e.g 10,000 thanks. That post mysteriously disappeared when it got to the nitty gritty didnt it? Anyway I got slightly off the track there, I merely stated my opinion about the people who have been members for a while, not cutting new members a certain amount of slack, I find it grossly unfair and please dont take it personally you are certainly not alone. Unfortunately this happens in playgrounds all round Britain. I did ask you a question earlier in this post, there is no need to answer it as I will now ignore your posts as they rarely contain any money saving tips, feel free to carry on policing the site as you wish. To the OP sorry to crash your post like this.

Ok let me just reply to this if you don't mind and then i'll leave it at that and you can ignore me and i'll ignore you though i don't care either way;)
Lets start with the thanks.I have thousands,do you seriously think i gained them thanks by people thanking me for saying something like i did in this thread as in it's a worthless post.Though saying that i didn't say it was exactly worthless just that it had indeed been posted before and more than once i think.Yes i do thank the odd post by people if i look at that thread from people saying it's not the right place to post as there are a very few people that just post very stupid threads in grabbit that don't belong there:)

On the point you raised about us having a discussion?
Can you direct me to that thread as i'm pretty sure i've never spoke to you at all on this site let alone any site?
I haven't got any friends on grabbit and probably not the whole site as it's a computer.I get on with people on the comps forum which is the main forum i use(now you can see where i got my thanks from).

Can you also point me to the thread that got to 10000 thanks/posts? i'm lost to what you mean and then disappeared?
Threads don't get removed after getting 10000 replies or thanks:confused:

Anyway i think this is the first time i have said what i did and i was being honest there are scores of posts about this subject and come on though some people on here seem to be very excited about it i can't see to generate that excitment over some lightbulbs;)

Lastly i will just say to the OP i honestly wasn't trying to be rude to you i was just saying it had indeed been posted before.I suppose i could have just said posted here so check the thanks with a link to the other post but then i do that like many others on the comps forum and someone had a go at me the other day for doing so(have a look at my posts the reaper thread) and by the way that was a recently new member too:rolleyes:

    Anyway over and out:D

  • I too have replaced all my bulbs with low energy but really it's all immaterial. I have a shower that uses 10,500 watts, yes ten thousand five hundred watts, so swapping a 60 watt bulb to a 9 watt bulb barely makes a chip in the amount of electric we use. One minute of my shower would power a 9 watt bulb for just short of 20 hours. We also have a kettle which has a 3000 watt element, just like everyone elses.
What I'm saying is that if we'd kept our old bulbs the factories wouldn't have had to use power to make them and all I would have to do is make one less cup of tea and have one less shower every year and the electricity saved would probably be more than that saved by all the low energy bulbs in my entire house.
The electricity savings from these bulbs seems totally out of perspective to me compared to other everyday electrical appliances.
    Ian.
