If it is a new development house you do have rights, otherwise it will be difficult unless they pecifically said in the documents that the system was in full working order.

Most EA's details seem to have 'systems have not been tested' or something along those lines. When I moved in June I got the boiler tested and the plumber said it was ok, luckily I had BG cover as I've had to call them out 4 times so far to replace stuff on it for free (circuit board, pump, timer etc).

I think if I was in your son's position I'd just accept the onus was on me to get it checked, have what needed to be fixed, fixed (without replacing the boiler), then get BG cover. IMO for what you pay monthly they're pretty good.

Could he maybe make a claim on the house insurance for the water leak?

Don't all shout at me :o I'm no expert on this stuff.

If you read my edit made when Squatnow had his hissy fit, I disclosed everything, the boiler was serviced and passed as fit, it then broke down so I claimed. I also disclosed the hot water was not working, and the engineer spent a good two hours fixing dodgy wiring. I asked if there was any charge (as it mentioned there might be in the T&Cs) and the engineer said no. Perhaps Squatnow should report him to his boss for too good customer service. And unlike Rick from the Young Ones, I was offering practical help to the OP. I got several hours of labour for the price of signing up to BG, something that could help his/her son.

Squatnow, were you the school sneak who went running to teacher telling tales? Your outbursts sound like Victor Meldrew, and probably spend hours in the dark watching neighbours with binoculars from behind your granny annexe curtain, screaming "I don't belieeeeve it!", and reporting them to the cops. Are you really all that's left of British anarchism?

Remember when that woman in debt came on here and you reduced her to tears telling her she was going to prison? Or when you recently told someone to abandon a house sale just before completion, which would have cost them thousands? Or your claim Richard Branson was financed by hundreds of millions from his parents? Now you're going to report me for making a genuine claim on my insurance?

If you have nothing useful to say to the OP, why try to derail this discussion?

SQUATNOW IS A GRASS AND A LIAR!

Lol... he changed his texts AFTER I had replied to it in an attempt to make me look bad.

It's actually quiet worrying... he seems to have real issues... the length and style of his posts shows real pent up hostility.

While I have no wish to act as a censor... it may be worth people stopping voting thanks to him as it just seems to pump him up and make him more hostile. Just a thought.
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

  • blimey - some of you mse are really harsh and pretty unwelcoming to newcomers and people who need advice, the OP only asked a question, i don't see how she was trying to push the blame of whatever.

anyway, in response to the OP, and as some of the others have said, i don't really think your son can do much about it (unless they said it worked as has been said already). It's the last thing you want when you have just forked out a small fortune on fees. At least he'll be the wiser for it next time he buys a property.

the first place i bought when i was 20-a bit wet behind the ears and didn't really have a clue what to ask and sure enough encountered a few issues after i moved in and even more in the 7 years i lived there. I've recently sold and bought my second place and specifically asked my solicitor heaps of questions to ask the vendor and to service the heating system before exchange. They did and it failed so they got a new boiler installed before we exchanged. Live and learn hey. The British Gas thing may well be worth a punt tho.

I think it would be a minor miracle if somebody wasn't disappointed by something when they bought a house.

    There's always a surprise somewhere.
