Cheapy plastic greenhouses?

I have limited space in our garden so I was thinking about getting one of those £15 plastic 'greenhouses' from Wilkos/Argos. DH says that they are probably no go, but I wanted your learned opinions please :) I will be using it for seedlings that I will be growing indoors, but hopefully once big enough I could put them in there. Do they protect against the cold/frost?

Thank you!

Do you mean one of the little growhouses with a plastic frame and poly cover ?
If so i use two of these as an overflow for my "proper" greenhouse.
They are fine, i use them for growing seeds and hardening off. Had them for several seasons now and have not had to replace a cover yet.

Mine are located against a wall of the house out of any direct wind though.
Given they are quite light i could imagine they could be a problem in an open windy position.

I have one and zip tie it to the fence. It worked well last year when I started off veg seeds in it and transferred them to growbags and buckets. I have just got an allotment so really looking forward to planting out in beds this year :-)

Had mine for quite a few years now, put my seedlings out when i run out of windowsills!

I usually just cover it over with a old blanket/quilt on cold nights. think some people use bubblewrap.
  • We've had one for a few years now, just for raising seeds and when that's done we keep tomotoes in it. We put it away in the winter to keep it in reasonable condition. Top tip is to obviously keep it somewhere fairly sheltered and we weigh ours down with brinks at the bottom to stop it blowing away when its windy.
As we've had ours for a while the zip is now broken so they don't last forever but they defo pay for themselves.

    Hope that helps!

  • Hi, I got one of these a couple of weeks ago. Its quite light so needs 'pegging down'. I also have my old cast iron bbq on the bottom shelf (bbq now stawberry pot - looks much nicer lol). I found the cheapest place for it was Woolies @ £14.99. Argos very kindly put their price up to £24.99 with their new catalogue and Wilkos have them at £19.99 on their on-line store (not in my local shop yet). I was a bit annoyed at this, as they were all selling them for £10 last year - doh!

We had one a couple of years back and it served us well until we had really severe winds and the top was ripped off - it was in a sheltered position too so do be careful where you put it and make sure the plastic is secure. We fixed the framework to the wall but didn't bother with the plastic so our own fault really. Still, it was cheap enough and we'd have had another one but the council blessed us with three wheelie bins so now we don't have the space.

They're fine but do get ridiculously hot if left zipped up and it's a hot day. It's imperative it's against a wall, mine was against a fence only half its height and stayed there all summer just fine weighed down with bricks.

Then one day it got windy and there was a very loud crash.

It's going back up in a better (albeit slightly less sun exposed) position this year but expect the odd hole to occur and the stitching to come away in places even when well looked after, they're just not that strong.

Hi I brought a new one of theese in woolies yesterday, was £30 down from 60 but this one isnt just 2 shelves and a plastic cover it has staging that forms the sides and you can actually walk in to it. If this sounds any good let me know and I will hunt out the box with dimensions on it.:D
