If you want further confirmation try ringing the HMRC ISA helpline (0845 604 1701 Monday -Thursday 8.30-5.00, Friday 8.30-4.30), rather than Barclays, because if this is what they're telling you, they are mis-informing you.

I paid a visit to my local Barclays branch yesterday. I stated that the A&L one was for the transferral of older ISA funds (and being so, is not considered opening a new account) and that I'd like to deposit this years contribution with them.

I received their usual reply of "you can't open two ISA's in the same tax year". I do feel like I'm being treat like an idiot by Barclays.

So come Monday morning I'll be on the phone to the helpline. I'll hopefully find out that I'm not actually being an idiot!

Don't forget if you are on a free call package, to telephone 0161 9319070 (info from saynoto0870.com) and ask for Savings helpline.

BTW Do you really want to go with Barclays ?;)

Yes, thanks for the number reminder.

I'm only going with Barclays because they are offering the best percentage rate at the moment. Is there any reason why I shouldn't?

They've got to be the top of the table for incompetance and slow service. If you try to open your ISA now, you might be lucky to get some communication from them by Christmas.

If you can put £3,600 in and don't mind it being unavailable for 12 months (early access subject to penalties), Julian Hodge are offering a fixed rate ISA @ 6.50%. I don't know what their service is like, I've never been to them. This product wasn't available when I opened this year's ISA. I went to B&B fixed @ 6.25%.

I've had several FRISAs with them over the years, currently one from last October at 6.5%, and have always found their customer service to be excellent.

The only negative which I have found is the 14-day window of opportunity for transfer upon maturity. After 14 days, their standard Cash ISA Ts & Cs apply, which require 3 months notice for withdrawals/transfers without incurring an exit fee.

I recently got a statement from Barclays (an old Woolwich ISA) and they were only offering between 4.26% and 4.81%.

That's their standard Cash ISA rate prior to 1st May, now 4.01% to 4.56%.

The Tax Haven Cash ISA is 6.25% AER, if you can actually open one.

    Dear Baldur,

I have only just found this thread. Thanks for the advice that I am allowed to open an ISA just to transfer in previous years' ISA funds, even though I've invested up to the limit for this year already.
My question is: How do I find an "ISA by Transfer" provider?

    Thanks.
