Do you think I could get a better upgrade than this?

Hi!

I would really appreciate your advise on this one.

My mobile is with O2 and I get billed through Carphone Warehouse my current tariff is O2 100 and I normally go over the texts but not the minutes.

They have been texting me since before Christams tellin me I'm due an upgrade. Each text says something different (to entice me I suppose!) like "500 texts & 20 mins if you upgrade" and "Upgrade and get a 9 month contract with all the benefits of an 18 month contract"

After loads of deliberation I have decided that I want a LG Viewty and I don't want to pay more than I am at the moment £25 per month.

I phoned CPW and after tonnes of haggling they have finally offered me a Viewty for £25/month with a £100 cashback which takes it to £19.50/month.
for that I get 500 texts, 200 mins and unlimited web-browsing.
The thing is it's for a 18-month contract & I only want a 12-month contract do you think it's worth phoning up and haggling again or is this as good as it's going to get?
Bearing in mind they sent through a couple of texts saying about the 9 month contract with 1the benefits of an 8 month one.

Any advise would be really, really appreciated :D

  • forget CPW, ring o2 directly and tell them you will leave unless they can match that deal for the lg viewty for £19.50 a month.

my girlfriend was on the sim only £15 package, and they offered her 500mins and 1000txt's plus a nokia (cheap model) for £15 a month...

most contracts are for 18months now, and the best deals are to be had on them... say this to o2 when you call up... as them whats the best offer they can do on a 12month contract.
  • Thanks Deano :D

The only problem is I've gone direct to O2 before and they tell me that although I am on the O2 network my contract is with CPW :o

My partner wants to upgrade to a Viewty too and has just phoned O2 (he's on O2 50, a very, very low tariff), they told him the cheapest they can do it for is £35 for a 18-month contract. He's been with O2 for over 14 years (since before they were Cellnet in the times of Loadsamoney brick-phones :rotfl: )!!!!

Seems like brand loyalty means nothing to phone companies anymore!
  • basically, the more you spend, the more of a high value customer you are and are able to get more out of them, however, was it just standard upgrades you went to? if you hint to them that your thinking of leaving, they will put you through to the retentions dept, who have the ability to make you better offers to keep your custom. however, your husband being on a very cheap tariff like that would find it hard to get one of the latest phones for free unless he moves up to a more "profitable" tariff.

as for the CPW, your contract is with o2 to supply line-rental, thats where your payments go each month. you can upgrade direct with o2, CPW are just a 3ed party dealer (like phones4u, dial-a-phone, mobile-shop) and get a one-off commision payment for every new contract/upgrade... if they are willing to give you £100 out of their profit... how much are they making?

always best to upgrade direct with your service provider (o2) through their retentions dept.

I work for one of the big 5 mobile company's (no names mentioned) in the uk offering retention packages, 9/10 people just want the best deal and to be rewarded to their loyalty to the network.

i found most people request their pac number, to take their number to another network, if you dont use it, your contract stays the same, but if you request it, you get great offers to keep your custom.

its not as complicated as i make it sound by the way :)

You should know, then, that cpw have been supplying the o2 service to their customers!
  • the service comes directly from o2... carphone warehouse basically just sell and setup contracts, they dont provide the actual service, being a 3ed party company in-between the customer and the network provider. sorry if i didnt make that clear.
i dont see why there would be a problem of an o2 customer, ringing up o2 upgrades/retentions and getting direct packages.

Because this customer's contract is with cpwo2, not o2 direct!
  • I know it shouldn't be a problem, but it is :o O2 just tell me that I'll have to cancel my contract with CPW and take out a new one with them.

I know that what we spend each month on our phones isn't a lot £25 each, but as I told the retentions guy why should I spend more when my mobile phone signal in my house is carp!

I did get put through to the upgrades department who offered me basically nothing, so I told him I wanted to cancel my contract and they put me through to the retentions dept. It was that guy that gave me the £19.50/month for 18 months deal (and that was after loads & loads of haggling!!).

My partner's just hacked off with O2 cos after 14 years of paying the same service provider (and never missing a payment etc) you'd think that there would be some loyalty on their part wouldn't you!
The thing is he needs his for business and cos he's had the same number forever, he's quite loathe to cancel his contract & change numbers.

Anyway that's the ranting over, am I just aksing for too much to expect a 12-month contract instead of an 18-month one? It's not even like the Viewty's a brand new phone for goodness sake (my brother-in-law's had one since October last year).

I may be wrong, but what I have heard is that CPW buy their minutes in bulk from O2 and they sell it on.

    You don't have a contract with o2.

Your contract is with cpw. That is the problem.

(You pay them the bill each month, don't you?)

If you want a retention deal you need to speak with cpw.

Otherwise cancel with cpw and start again with a new contract, though you won't get a retention deal then.
  • Ummm, Quentin CPW is exactly who I have been talking to regarding my upgrade.

I spoke to CPW upgrades first and then when I asked to cancel I got put through to CPW retentions.

I talked to O2 about my partner's upgrade! I just bought him into the thread (probably confusingly to show that he's just got a far worse offer than I have ;)
