What is all of this waffle about?

The OP posted a cheap chicken at Tesco's.

    Fine.

If some of you don't like it or want to buy it, move on, no need to come here preaching your standards on others.

In fact, I have to ask the question of why you came to the thread in the first place? .. other than to spout your " standards " on others.

Lol, I popped in to this thread to see what sort of flaming the poor OP was getting. I've not been surprised. They posted about £1.99 chickens. This seems like playground bullying to me.

The way I see it is that everyone has their own opinions on how they spend their budgets, opinions on how the food they buy has been produced. Each to their own. So what if people choose to buy cheap chicken but have a shiny new hi-def tv or BMW on their driveway. It's their choice. Does buying free range organic chicken instead of "plastic chicken" and having a hi-def telly and a BMW make them better people? No. It all comes down to choice yet again.

As it goes, I was in Tesco at the weekend and I was more than happy to pay extra to buy an organic free range chicken for a nice Sunday lunch and sandwiches for Monday, but I couldn't find one. There was plenty of chicken packaged in new green "healthy living" logos that made it look like it may be a more "upmarket" natural choice, and with a suitably inflated price tag to go with the new labelling. I ended up buying a £3.50 chicken. Can't say I didn't try.

Oh and to the poster that said no-one is far from a farm shop, I live in what is considered to be a "semi rural" community and the farm shops round here have all closed down.

    BTW, I'm a non-smoker, teetotal, non-BMW driving....

PMSL You just shoot self in the foot Lotus

"The idleness imposed by factory farming methods is being blamed for soaring obesity levels among chickens, a problem that affects conventionally and organically produced meat."

I officially rest my case, Organic birds are fattier aswell:T:T:T
    Quotes in context only please.

Sorry, no-one but you I think was talking about organic chickens, we're talking about free range.
Of course it affects all mass produced birds, but those
that can at least walk will be better. I did read the article you know.

    I've been Money Tipped!
As this is the Quick! Grabbit while you can board, I'm going to say thanks to the op for pointing out a cheap price.

May I suggest those that wish to discuss issues such as the lives of birds, pop on over to The Money Savers Arms

Thanks, I thought I had posted this thread on wrong board. Quite a reaction.....

have to say have always chosen normal chicken breast or a whole chicken....but then I tried my local farm shop.

I got a huge chicken about double the size of the free range tesco one, which easily would have done 3-4 meals for two people for £8, the price per Kg was slightly less than tesco or at least 2 meals for 4

But the thing was the taste, it had a real meat taste, not a watery sort of taste, it was full of flavour and we've ordered another for this week

I agreed people buy want they want to...Jamie and hugh's TV show, proved that we just didnt know where our chickens really came from, or that we chose not to.

I wouldnt go organic as this is out of my price, but even the cheaper cuts of free range I've found the flavour not lacking on free range

No more scummy white water in my frying pan thank you very much

Having read the telegraph link, surely a chicken running round a field will have less fat on it, as its got to walk around, albeit not quite as slim as one that has to find its food in the wild.

Well said, and well done on the farm store - I'm going to check one out on my way home, the less of my money spent in a supermarket the better!
  • For those concerned about the 'truth' of the label organic or free range. I know this is a variation on a theme but ....

I know someone who provides eggs for Waitrose, I'm not sure if they are organic, or organic and free range. Anyway the checks that everything is legit are numerous and there's loads of paperwork. Waitrose make sure that the farmer is adhering to what is stated on the label or the deal is off !

I assume that all supermarkets who provide eggs do the same...........

Also when I was little we kept hens for eggs, and fattened up cockerels for Christmas. I have many happy memories of feeding them, they were more like pets really, they would follow you around. Therfore, I would not knowingly buy a chicken that had been raised in a cage and am embarrassed by the fact that in the past I must have done so. I would now rather eat less chicken and pay more in the knowledge that what life the chicken had was a happy one.
