Anyone who uses the excuse they can't afford to eat free range needs to look at their budget. We managed to continue to buy free range whilst my patner was reciveing SSP and we did fine.

For £5 (or 2 for £8) I got a massive free ranger from my local market, a breast did all 4 of us one meal, the half the other breast went into a chicken pie, the other half into sweet and sour chicken and noodles, the thigh meat was used for sandwiches and the wings and legs went into a curry. I got 6 meals out of it it was that big so I would say it cost 25p per person per meal.

The amount of junk that gets injected in to broiler chickens isn't nice and I couldn't put that in to my childs mouth. If budget got to it then I would rather go without than contribute to an already horrendous industry which not only fails the chickens, it fails the farmer.

  • Sould say thanks for drawing our attention to the price...but definitely not for me am sticking to free range organic....couldn't give it away to me.....and for the record I earn less than £1000 a year...so I think I'm definitely on the poverty line....I still choose to eat ethically x

That's not the most scientific way of backing up claims that the majority of consumers now buy free range. If that were the case surely the majority of birds for sale would be free range?

    Awareness doesn't always equal purchase.

my local Tesco has plenty left at the end of the day as the majority of people have started buying free range

there is nothing scientific needed to back up what I have seen in my local store. You only quoted part of my sentence I was not talking about scientific facts for the whole of Britain.

Sounds like you need a few cooking lessons. Lol!

I got one of these chickens last night and it was delicious. It's all about how you cook it.

Note to self...Must cook with sauce to hide nasty bits. :rotfl:
  • Free range or battery, they all die the same way.

Quality of life ... well, it depends if the term "birdbrain" actually has a meaning.. if birds cant think and feel emotions, then their surroundings matters little to them. In which case, the birds wont care how they are raised as long as they are not literally tortured.

Taste ... if you use the chicken for a stew, curry or anything heavily flavoured, you will not be able to tell the difference between fr and battery.
Restaurants / takeaway / ready meals ... the minority may prefer them to use free range, but if I was a businessman, I would use the cheapest possible chicken or risk losing business by raising my prices.

Solution... there is only one way you can get the majority of people off battery hens... a health scare. If suddenly, we were told that eating battery hens may kill you, then a lot (not all - think about smokers) of people will start buying fr instead.

Let's face it, it is not about affordability. By nature, people are selfish and look after number one first. So, where there is little discernable difference, people will always buy the cheaper option. Of course there are exceptions, but supermarkets are selling to the majority here, and that is the only way to maximise business. They are not here for our health.

It is not the same as buying a car or a tv ... there is a difference in how people look at you whether you are driving a Kia or a BMW. There is certainly a difference between as ASDA and a Sony Tv. However, when your chicken is chopped up and in a curry sauce, nobody, including the diner, will be able to tell the difference.

People may have started buying more free range chickens in your store, when buying an actual bird. But sales of every other chicken item, such as ready meals etc, on the whole contain non free range chicken and those sales have not been affected at all.

It is just a fad, and at the end of the day people get what they pay for.

If they want a cheap lower quality item they will buy a £1.99 chicken. If they are having a nice meal and want a nicer quality item, they will buy a better quality chicken or better still go to a real butcher  .

I personally don't know what all the fuss is about. :rotfl:

What is all of this waffle about?

The OP posted a cheap chicken at Tesco's.

    Fine.

If some of you don't like it or want to buy it, move on, no need to come here preaching your standards on others.

In fact, I have to ask the question of why you came to the thread in the first place? .. other than to spout your " standards " on others.

If someone saw a cheap DAB radio that was posted on here and you thought it was a load of rubbish and for a couple of quid extra you could have a better one, not to mention it could have more of a chance of being worse physically for you....... do you not think you could mention it?
Thats without the issue of millions of animals being treated badly.

And what evidence do you have for your statement "plenty have died by eating no chicken"
I think you need to drag yourself away from your pc to take 5 minutes to think your arguments through

    In context.... I said

"And some of us think there's more to worry about than a CHICKEN. Nobody has died of eating a broiler, but plenty have died by eating no chicken"

The debate was at that point how unhealthy cheap chickens are, OK. So I was pointing out that while some people are being fussy at what they eat, there are millions starving who wouldn't mind some cheap chicken so they don't die.

The starving millions are general knowledge facts, statements about chicken being less nutritious than 30 years ago, needs evidence to back it up.

Hope that clears that up for you;)
    Quotes in context only please.
