A&L Won't Give Me My Money

I've just rang my local Alliance & Leicester branch to arrange to withdraw £1000 from my account for my holiday. The unhelpful lady on the phone said the most I could withdraw was £500 - £250 from the machine & £250 over the counter. So, I rang A&L Customer Service Centre (using the number as if calling from abroad via my 18866 account). I waited for 11 minutes to actually speak to someone & was then told rather rudely, after verifying my account details, that I'd been told once before not to call that number & to call the 0845 number & that she couldn't deal with me as a result. How livid am I?!?! I have plenty of money in my account, I can't withdraw it in time for my holiday & the woman on the phone was quite rude. I will be closing my account with them that's for sure. A very hacked of A&L soon to be ex customer.

what crap customer service, morons like these shouldnt be customer facing. Give them a rocket as well as closing the account. Hope you find somewhere better to go...
if it's more than 10 stone, and that hairy, it's probably not a dog...it may be a wookie.
  • Quick suggestion the limits are each day, so you could get £1000 out in two days if you can get to branch twice before holidays. The branch staff should be able to 'order' you cash. Not sure of A&L, but this is most banks policy - you can have £x without notice, any more you need to give x days notice.

I'd officially complain about the 0845 number and them refusing to speak to you, wonder what their response willl be??

Hope you get the money in time for your holiday....
  • As far as I was aware you can withdraw any amount you have available, over the counter BUT if over £250.00 you have to give notice/book in advance.

Maybe it would be worth poping into your local branch and see if you can arrange to come back at a set time to collect the money. This said, you should of been able to arrange this over the phone. In addition you should be able to arrange to collect the money from either a branch of A&L or a post office.

It's shocking isn't it. I haven't been so angry about anything in such a long time! I've been on hold on the 0845 number for over 18 minutes & have given up. I can feel a stinking letter of complaint coming on. 2 weeks ago, I set up a payment to move some money from my A&L account to my parter's account. After 24 hours, the payment still hadn't left my account. I rang them to query this & was told not to worry, she would manually make the payment there & then. That's what she did, but she moved the money twice leaving me overdrawn. They accepted it was their mistake & said the money would be put back in my account. A week later, it still wasn't there but I was assured the money was still in their system & it definitely wouldn't go to my partner's account. You've guessed it - it did go to my partner! I then had all the hassle of getting them to adjust my account to make it look like I hadn't overdrawn in the first place - something that they still haven't resolved! Avoid this bank at all costs - your cost!!!

I'm trying to activate my new Chip and Pin card with them. I phoned Customer Services on the geo number and was told that I couldn't activate it there and I had to use the premium number.

I'm going to phone back now and tell them if they don't want to activate my card then they can go to hell. I'm not paying them to look after my money!

I wouldn't even bother phoning them - find yourself a better bank! I certainly plan to!

You could try going to a post office and presenting a cheque. My post office will allow an instant withdrawl of £1000 via cheque.

Yesterday I went to my local A&L branch to ask if I could withdraw £1500 - I had taken passport id with me just in case!

The staff told me that as long as they had enough spare cash to cover this - no probs - but they would need to see my id.

I have a premier plus account which has only been opened about 2 months.

I really think it depends on the branch. Even though the same rules should apply for all branches. Some are more helpful than others. Often they will do it for you and trot out the line "we will do it on this occasion but next time you must blah blah blah".

Pop into your branch with photo ID and hopefully they will help.

Once you get your hol money, I personally would kick up such a stink about the customer svc staff being so rude. As for the 0845 - don't get me started!!!
