I tried last week and just couldnt get anyone to answer, waste of 25p, so tried again today and was offered 500 free texts a month INSTEAD of being given my pac. I took the pac as my mum is partially sighted and cant text and shes off to tesco mobile asap. Very nice CS and got through on 01782 609658 which is free for me at weekends

Well for a first post this may be of some use to people here.
I currently work for one of the Leading 3 operators & we deal with requests for PAC codes on a very regular basis
We are very much aware people do this for the sake of some freebies (All be its minutes / txt's / credit) - hell Ive even done it myself ! The market is so saturated with operators no company is willing to lose any custom.
Vodafone / o2 / Virgin / Orange / t-Mobile / 3 ect ect ect... all want to keep their customers happy & with their service so you will normally be offered any one (Or a combination) of the following
Free Minutes
Free Txt's
Around £20 Credit (Depending on the value of the customer / amount they spend this can go to nearly 4x) - Remember it costs operators pennies to give away £10 credit & its going straight back to them anyway !
If you want to get a deal doing this then here is a few tips to get yourself a few extra deals :
1. Know your stuff
Spend 10 minutes online finding out about the operator you are transferring to and the price plan (Tariff ) you would be looking at taking on - don't be surprised if the advisor starts asking questions about this "better deal" you have been offered as 99% of them know what the current rival operators are offering. Making stuff up will only get you a worse deal / nothing.
2. Incentive, Incentive, Incentive !!!
Its the most overused word in the telecommunications industry - its all about retaining customers using incentives. Remember some operators offer free credit to join / free credit to register / 10%+ back on top-ups so make sure you mention this when asked about why you are leaving the operator. This is your best chance of getting some free credit normally marked down as a "Goodwill Gesture" to stay with the company for another month and keep you as another one of their "Valued Customers"
3. Who you will speak to . . . .
Most of the major operators have whats called a "Retention Team" - These people are employed just to keep customers from leaving & you will be surprised what they could offer to keep you as a customer & on their network. The best time to phone is between 7am & 7pm otherwise you may just be passed to a normal customer service advisor who couldn't give a toss !!.
4. Never try it too often . . .
Notes will be kept on all customer accounts about if a "Retention Deal" has been made - Most places will offer you a deal to stay & give you a month to try it out. If you phone back again within the next 2 - 6 months it is very likely you will just be handed your PAC code & a "Sorry we couldn't help more". This code is valid for 28 days and should be given to your new operator. If you fail to do this you will be retained by your current operator until you request again / new sim ect...
5. Offered Nothing . . .
If the advisor thinks you are just in it for the freebies / just cant be helped (However if you do your homework properly this shouldn't happen) you may just be offered your PAC code and a big cheerio. If this happens dont fear - if you dont use your pac code then you will be retained by your current provider.
This is all I am willing to post up just now
Hope this helps someone out there !
