OK- i've set up a cash card account with Barclays (did it in branch yesterday), we've closed our joint account with Abbey (so that no longer exists) and i wanted to get my partners name removed from our joint account at HSBC which they told me the only way i could do it was to completely close the HSBC account and set up another (new) account for myself!! Very long-winded but the joint account now no longer exists.

I assume this means that the money they threatened to take out on friday is now stopped because the account no longer exists to take it from.

I'm desparate to get on with filing for bankruptcy and just get it over with because its causing me so much stress. I can't think about anything else except money (the complete lack of it, anyway!) To top everything off, i had a meeting with my regional manager yesterday to start discussing going back to work part-time (i'm currently on additional maternity leave- otherwise known as 'unpaid maternity') and it doesn't look good.

Apart from changing all the bank details so i'm not financially linked ot my partner anymore, is there anything else i need to do before taking the bankruptcy plunge?? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

As you and your OH have been financially linked in the past, I don't think its going to be as simple as closing down joint accounts. You will need to write to the credit reference agencies and inform them that your OH wishes to be disassociated from you as a financial link no longer exists.

Thanks NekoZombie- i hadn't thought of that.

What happens if, when i file for bankruptcy, they find a financial link between us? Will my partner be persued for my debts? The loan and credit card that i'm having trouble paying are in my name only but my partner does have a loan with another bank that is solely in his name.

I'm sorry if i'm asking really obvious questions- i'm really ignorant where money is concerned & i find it really hard to get my head around things like this.

As long as you don't have any outstanding joint debts then your OH won't be chased for anything. I was thinking more in terms of your bankruptcy negatively affecting your OHs credit rating if you don't update all the information held by credit reference agencies.

i'd agree with Neko I took my name of a joint bank account I had, once my ED came through I requested copies of my credit files...there was one financial link still showing a joint credit card?...even though it was totaly wrong me being BR still had an effect on my OH when she tried to apply for a savings acc

Would it be best if we both write to them, or just him, or just me??

How many credit refenence agencies should we write to and which ones?

Sorry about all the questions- like i said i'm quite ignorent about these things and there doesn't seem to be many places to get this information from (unless i'm looking in the wrong places)

Thanks fermi. That link has explained a lot (and in simple terms, which is perfect for me!)

Should disassociation be delt with before i file for bankruptcy? Its just that i want to get bankruptcy over and done with as soon as i can and this sounds like quite a long process.
TBH i don't think i can handle anymore phone calls from HSBC asking me to explain why i've cancelled the direct debits for my loan and credit card and why i'm not paying- i know its all part of the process and i just have to deal with it but i just want it done with quickly because the stress is causing all sorts of problems.
