Just to concur with your annoyance with Orange.
I wanted to drop from contract 60 to 30 since just don't use the mob that much. went to the web and you see new customers get 30 minutes x plus 30 minutes evening i.e. more or less a talk 60 but 5 quid cheaper.

But not for someone like me who has been with them over nine years.

it is so annoying. anyway I have simply cancelled with them.

My website has lots of info and photos from various Greek and Canary Islands esp. about walking. My profile has the site address cos not allowed to put it here.

I have done the whole port out of orange and port back into orange thing.

I used Vodaphone PAYG for the porting.  If you call their porting number, they will send you a free SIM with £1 in it.  You then need to call them up to port out again.

A couple of things to note.  When you get your PAC code from Orange, it has a 30 validity period on it.  This means when you port to Vodaphone, you need to wait for your PAC code to expire (which will be 30 days from the day you get the PAC code) before you can request a PAC code from Vodafone to port back out to Orange.

I would use Vodaphone as opposed to Virgin, simply because it is easier to do so.

Also btw when you join back with Orange they will run a credit check on you (this will affect your credit rating), but you will be put back on your old account.
If I did do this, would the Vodafone SIM work in my existing Orange phone (a Nokia 3210)?

if the phone is unlocked it will, being an Orange phone I doubt it is unlocked currently, use one of the online unlockers is probably easiest

My Girlfriend had this problem with T-mobile.

    We Did this:
    1/ Got a 99p online sim from O2
2/ Got her PAC code from T-mobile
3/ Contacted O2 Cust services (if you are tricky you can do this without putting on credit)
3/ Ordered the new deal (with new number) from T-Mobile (so it was on the existing account number so faster processing)
4/ when the five business days passed her account with T-mobile then only had the new contract and number
5/ Next day we called O2 and got their PAC code. They waffled on about needing to be with them or activated (the £10) and I said why if we are disconnecting in five days. A couple of quotes from the Ofcom regulations on porting numbers (shows they legally are compelled to give them to you) and got the PAC code.
6/ Rang T-mobile and asked to port in our old number on the new contract and gave them the code.
7/ Five days later she was back.

In the intervening time she could still use the free minutes on her new contract to call.

    So it cost 99p

Be prepared to argue and have a copy of the porting rules. you shoud win.

    Cheers
    K
