Porting Number to same network...

OK, here's my dilemma:

I'm an Orange contract customer, who is annoyed (quite rightly) that the best offers are reserved purely for new customers, and the existing customers cannot get them.

I don't want to cancel my Orange contract and have to change my phone number, as that would be a big hassle.

I don't want to cancel my Orange contract and sign up with a different network, as I want to keep using my 18866/1899 override numbers.

But: could I request the code to keep my phone number from Orange, terminate my current contract, then go and join them again as a new customer, bringing my "old number" back to them?

It seems obtuse, but if they're going to insist that I have to quit and become a new customer, I don't mind being obtuse!

Port out your number to PAYG and port back in. I guess that the only way to keep your number.

I'm in the same situation with yourself. I have just taken out a new Orange Contract as the deals online are better than in store. My first Oange Contract is on the OVP Virgin Plan which I want to keep as there is no line rental to pay anyway.

I phoned Orange Number Porting on 0800 376 2285 to ask if I could swap the numbers round. ie the new number moved onto the OVP Virgin Plan and take the OVP Virgin Plan number onto the new contract but i was told no.

Thanks all - it's most annoying.

I think I'll just cancel and get a new number. The savings will outweigh the hassle... I hope!

You can't port your number directly from Orange to Orange.

However, you could port it to another network's PAYG and back again - say from Orange-->Virgin-->Orange

However, if you ring up to cancel there is a chance they will offer you a deal (free upgrade, different tariff etc) to stop you cancelling your existing contract

Thanks - out of interest, do you know how long it would take for the whole process of porting to another network's PAYG and back again?

7-10 days to port out, then  I think you have to be on Virgin for 30 days before they will give you PAC then another 7-10 days back in

I have done the whole port out of orange and port back into orange thing.

I used Vodaphone PAYG for the porting. If you call their porting number, they will send you a free SIM with £1 in it. You then need to call them up to port out again.

A couple of things to note. When you get your PAC code from Orange, it has a 30 validity period on it. This means when you port to Vodaphone, you need to wait for your PAC code to expire (which will be 30 days from the day you get the PAC code) before you can request a PAC code from Vodafone to port back out to Orange.

I would use Vodaphone as opposed to Virgin, simply because it is easier to do so.

Also btw when you join back with Orange they will run a credit check on you (this will affect your credit rating), but you will be put back on your old account.

Does this apply to 3 also?

don't think it is as simple with 3, pretty sure they won't port a number from them to another netwoek but you can take a number to them, however it won't handle video calls etc

all sounds complicated accroding to phones4u details

When porting your number to 3, it is important to be aware that once the transfer has taken place, both your existing ported number and the new mobile number supplied with the phone will work on your new handset. To receive video calls you will need to supply your new 3 number to people wishing to call you, as video calling will not work via your Ported existing number.

Did a port out of 3 w/o much problem though they put me on hold for almost an hour to reach the retention team.
