I don't object to letters sent to me showing my first and second names. I shred everything with name, address, account number. If you were going to be defrauded, more than your name would be needed for information.

I also just thought, it doesn't have to be companies, anything I get from friends and family has my entire name on. I'm not going to instruct them to only address me by my initial when sending me cards, letters etc.

So, markyt, it's just a case of maintaining some professional distance then?

PS - agree on the "mate" thing.

I've never heard anything so ridiculous in my entire life.

I disagree with the OP, I wouldn't say it was ridiculous though.

I have the same initial as my brother so when we lived together we had no idea what mail was for who unless our full name was used.

That wasn't too much of an issue as we are brothers at least.

If I lived in a house-share and there was someone I didn't really know with the same initial and surname, I could see it being a bigger problem.

When comanies call, they should definitely be polite and use Mr xxx xxxxx not James or whatever. They're not our friends after all and they should be more professional.
After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE. Such is life.
  • I don't really care. If someone wants to steal your identity, they can find out your first name by using your last name and address. I also don't care if people know my name.

    You may offend the envelope!
  • On a sightly different note .... we have been told at work to never refer to a persons Christian name but to their First nameas the word Christian may be offensive to persons from different religious backgrounds!:D

I call it a first name because I'm not from this country. I remember (before I knew what a Christian name was) when someone asked me what my Christian name was. I was like, "I don't have one...." and my husband was like, "Your first name, ya big goober!"

For some reason I thought it was another name you get when you get baptized or something. I was so confused. We can both laugh about it today.

I think we are moving away from the OP's main issue, identity fraud because someone knows his name.
Has the world gone fricking mental, to even give this any thought whatsoever is ridiculous.

BRB, just going to steal my neighbours identity. I know his full name and the fool even has his house number on his door so know I have his address too.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - Done in a slightly demented mad genious type way.
