I had a quick look on Google and can't find what you are referring to apart from a few people moaning about 1&1's domain renewal policy...
If you want to PM me a link then I'll be happy to take a look but I can't find any "widespread" problem...

Avoid this company.
1and1 have very bad practice. Their service is good, reliable, and it works most of all, but their business practice is disgusting.
Firstly, hidden away in the ts&cs is a clause whereby your domain names will be renewed without forewarning or authorisation to charge your account.
Secondly let's say you have paid for hosting in full and in advance. Should you have a completely seperate domain renewed, or some other charge applied, and suffer an enexpected outlay, 1and1 will suspend a service that you have already paid for in full.
They have no reason to fail to provide a service for which you have paid. It's called intimidating customers.
Nothing but problems with this web host. Lousy support, lousy service, trouble with a capital "T". Avoid like the plague!!!
The Office Of Fair Trading told me that their business practice on this count is illegal.
Woah there... if you value customer service don't go there. I was with (and still am) 1&1 - they are very difficult to get rid of and make it very hard to transfer domains out of their control etc...
Disgraceful service... totally disgraceful.

As I said before, I would be interested in seeing in what context these comments were made...
Domain renewal still seems to be the common theme along with bad customer service which I haven't experienced but admittedly, I have had very little need to contact their customer support.
1&1's pricing is extremely aggressive hence why I am keen to hear first-hand experiences rather than anonymous postings...
