ADSL vs. LLU (Local Loop Unbundling)

  • Again...I know what the different generations are. I know they are all ADSL products.

    I've done the tests & my Line: 14 db (D) - 3db (U) & SNR: 31 db (D) - 31 db (U) seemingly go in my favour for these products.

I know ADSL & ADSL Max go thru BT and ADSL2+ goes thru LLU providers via their equipment thru BT.

    My tests show...:

    ADSL1: I should get 1meg out of 2megs.
ADSL MAX: I should get 6.3-7megs out of 8megs max.
    ADSL2+: I should get 16-22megs out of 24megs.

Simply Digital told Tiscali's unlimited 8meg is a ADSL Max product. It's all about shopping around and asking independant advice.

I may purchase Sky Mid up to 8megs and then upgrade to Sky Max if I think I can get more.

I checked out DSL Zone UK for my estimated speeds.

  • Hi, there is something I would ask you abot guys.
Well, i have just moved to my place. On my old place i was with Be Unlt. as a LLU provider, and i was getting nice 16 Mbps, i have moved their service with me and now I have only 4 Mbps (4096 Kbps exactly !!!). Werether i check for ADSL MAX or ADSL2+ on my line it shows I should get 5.5Mbps over Max, and over 7Mbps on ADSL2+. Is it possible that over ADSL services i can get more than on LLU?
Is it coincidence that 4096Kbps? May it be that Be* have set some limit on my line?

Check your router statistics, it should give an idea of whats going on.

Hedeon - what sites say you should/could get can vary greatly from what you will ACTUALLY get :)
A lot will depend on line quality and length from the exchange not to mention internal wiring...
Check the router statistics as penrhyn says to start with.
Also it might be worth remembering that although you might be able to be put on a different line profile BUT it might not run as stable! So you might squeeze 5.5meg out of it but find that you start dropping connections for no apparent reason...
Where I live i CAN get 3+Mb but anything over 2.5 starts getting flakey - as DH is a keen (read addicted) 360 player then dropping connections isn't really acceptable to him ;) so we've opted for 2.5mb - as we live in a village that is all we're ever likely to see sadly unless a minor miracle happens! (and that is a lot better than it was as I used my work contacts to get BT engineers out to replace cables that had deteriorated over the years - suddenly our little mini estate started getting 2+Mb instead of <1Mb... :)

I'd speak to the tech team at be and ask them to tweak your line profile but keep monitoring it to make sure you don't end up with an unstable line :)
