KellsBells and buckets of cash - debt free diary

  • Hopefully the inheritance could ease things a bit or maybe think about putting it towards something you could enjoy as a family? I know its a tough decision for those in debt, repay it towards debt or use it for something that means something?

    Good Luck!
You're right - it really is a bit of a heart-ache, the one thing i don't want to do is having nothing to show for it, which debt repayment would feel like - but then again - there is a bit of peace of mind...... I don't know, it's a tough call. What's a better idea for the kids? Saving account or premium bonds?

    Hi Kelly,

Regarding the £500 each for your little lads, how about asking on one of the other boards which are more for that sort of thing. If you're unable to get a definate answer then I'd ask at the Citizen's Advice Bureaux; they'll certainly know.

I hope the settlement comes through without any hassles for you all. Have a good weekend - all of you!

    Are you ready Kelly???!

DON'T go too long without food young lady! Though just maybe you had yourself a good lie-in in which case you can be excused, but it is important to feed the body and the brain regularly.

Re the pension Kelly; You seem to sound quite positive about the fact of your brother and you being able to receive it, but I always though once someone died that (unless they had a living spouse) a pension 'died with them'. Is that not the case with your Dad's? I don't wish to be a wet blanket, just pointing out what used to be the case. Fingers crossed though!

It's quite common for a work pension also to be a kind of life insurance policy. OH's father died 3 years ago, and his pension paid out a lump son to OH and OH's younger brother (who were listed as the beneficiaries).

Thanks so very much neverdespairgirl. :T I was so delighted to read that as I'd been quite concerned for Kelly about it all since early yesterday morning.

Thank you so much! I can sleep peacefully now!

Hello, I'm here!! Thanks Sue, sadly no, was not a lie in, just a busy day and before I knew it, my tummy was rumbling away!
Re the pension, my dad was a postman in his younger years, and paid into a pension fund. He took an early pension release two years ago, due to being signed off to never work again (because of the alcoholism). The pension wrote to me after I registered them of the death to advise that because he had the pension less that 5 years (he only took it out two years ago) that they would make a lump sum payment of 5 years worth. We didn't expect it, could hardly believe it when we got the letter.

Thanks to you Kelly for also reassuring me of that as I'd been so concerned that you'd planned on getting something that you might not. Thank Heavens I worried needlessly until neverdespairgirl put me right and now - you too!

  • The healthplan thing - they make money because most people pay into it and dont use it, like my boyfriend who paid it for 2 years incase he needed dental treatment, he did, but it cost £40. They make money that way. For lenses, you save the receipts and send them all when your total spent is the max you can claim for the year, so say if you get £90 optical allowance, when your receipts total £90 or more, send the, You always pay the optician/dentist/ whoever first,s end the receipt and they reimbuse you. I get lenses online (much cheaper anyway) so costs me £76 a year, was paying £20 a month to vision express (make sure you check the price of solution out though to check your saving). However, with the other benefits you can just send the receipts as and when you have paid out. My little one was admitted for sickness and diahrea this weekend and I stayed with him so need to send a form off (for hospital stays you get them to sign a form).
    Congrats on the promotion.
