The oddest thing I ever heard was when my aunt's baby was overdue and she was realy fed up and willing to try anything. An old lady in her 80s told her to drink a pint of castor oil.She said they did it a lot in her day as it woud help and I quote "grease the way for the baby".She just could'nt get her head around the fact that the oil did'nt actually get to those parts and would probably just make her have very bad stomach cramps, followed by the runs."Oh yes" she said "but the baby always followed just after".0

My second child was 2 wks late so they took me into hospital for an induction. The first thing they gave me was cod liver oil and orange juice. It tasted vile and I didn't manage to drink most of it. Baby did follow about 10 hours later - naturally I am sure I didn't drink enough CLO!0 -

When I had my eldest in 1973, I had been in hospital for 6 weeks (raised BP) before having him. In that time I saw lots of women come in for a few days and then get around to being 'started off'.
This always entailed, on the previous evening after visiting time, being given an enema (the old pint and a half of soapy water with the rubber tube  ), and then, after the resulting effects, a lovely warm bath.
Many's the time we would wake the next morning to find an empty bed in the ward, with the nurses saying, 'Oh she couldn't wait and went during the night!'.
Needless to say, it didn't happen with mine - he needed the waters broken bit. But then again he was induced 2 and a half weeks early and weighed in at 7 and a half pounds!!! Heaven help me if he had gone the full-term!
So there could be something to do with having a darn good 'poop' that helps kick off the labour - maybe it's the effect on the muscles and the bowel contractions.
One of my sisters went for a car-ride from St.Helens to Blackpool just before one of her was due. That worked for her - she went into labour as they arrived so they came straight back home again. Straight to hospital and she delivered him in the corridor on the trolley without any help!!! (He was her third)
"When I started my periods my mother told me that I shouldn't muck about with boys anymore. I thought she meant when we played rounders or cricket on the green. It was years later that I understood she meant sexual things. What did she mean - anymore!!!!!" quote from moanymoany.
I got told exactly the same thing! Nothing further from my mind either - well at least not at the age of 12  !
Wasn't allowed to wash my hair either, have a bath (needed one more than ever then!), go swimming (no way was I allowed Tampax!), do PE at school and had to keep the used pads wrapped in newspaper in my bedroom until there were no males in the house so they could be burned on the coal fire! Either that or take them to school to put in the school 'incinerator thingy' in the loos - I went to an all-girls' school.0 -

Not washing your hair in the 'wrong week' was very common in the mid 60's. The same with having a bath. Why? Well, that was something else. 'You just can't'... I did wonder if it was thought you could catch a cold easily.
In our house there were lots of things like this. Not putting new shoes on the table - tell me any sense in that. Not eating raw oats because they gave you worms. Not saying hello to the Bailliff when I saw him in the street. He was a regular visitor at our house - he was always nice to me! That's one that's more understandable!0 -
I know its bad luck to put new shoes on the table but its whether your suspicious or not! I grew up with a load of 'just did's' and words only we had (Mum is Irish but mainly from my baby speak which stuck - like 'gint' for drink!) and OH laughs at me now!0
