Cut Your Car Insurance In 4 Steps Discussion Area

Don't be taken in by those companies like Direct Line who've opted out of comparison websites. They've good reason to since their quotes tend to be much much higher than the most competitive you'll find on sites like Moneysupermarket.
I recently asked a fully comp quote for an R reg Fiat Punto for myself (over 60yrs old) with my daughter (34 yrs with full license living at the same address as myself) as named driver. We both have clean licenses, no accidents for the past 15 yrs.
The quote from Direct Line at £787.32 (which actually exceeds the market value of the car!) was nearly 3 times that offered by the RAC through Moneysupermarket at £256.63
Small wonder they don't show their face on Comparison websites!0 -

Interesting stuff, tried this today for my new Mercedes SLK. Sadly my idiot friend crashed my Landrover last year so I knew it was going to be expensive. The various sites returned quotes of anything from £1,100 to £3,000, with excesses of anything from £250 to £5,000 (I am 30, otherwise clean record, no other claims etc, 2 years no claims bonus after the reduction for the claim).
Admiral quoted the lowest with a £250 excess - £1,564 which I thought was pretty good. I then called up to see what would change - how much it would go up - if I put my girlfriend (aged 25) on the insurance. Strangely enough, even though SHE would be the named driver, this cut the cost to £1,104. A saving of £460. I asked them to check and they said it was definitely right.
I then, feeling rather lucky, asked them to check what it would cost to add my Landrover onto the policy - that cost me £460 last year with 4 years no claims and before my idiot friend had the accident. Admiral were able to add the Landrover for £374 and a total of £1,378 meaning that overall I have saved over £600 today vs the 2 seperate policies.
So definitely if you have 2 cars, try Admiral for that, and if you have a female in the house who will even occasionally drive the car, try adding her to the insurance, it might actually SAVE you money, bizarre though it sounds.
NB Before anyone theorizes that I may have misled them somehow, I made it VERY clear that I am the main driver and that my girlfriend will be driving both cars only very occasionally as she has her own car.
The reason your quote may go down is due to what they call 'customer segmentation analysis' - a branch of marketing. I found that when I added my wife onto my policy the total cost went down from when I was the sole driver.
Basically the theory goes that single men (especially under 30) are a very high insurance risk. Married men, even if your age hasn't changed, are much less likely to crash, etc. So much so that it even outweighs the extra risk of having another driver on the policy.
I'm finding the premiums are increasing a little now that we have a child. One insurer told me that having a child in the car puts us in a slightly higher risk group, because of the increased likelihood that someone will run into the back of us when we're out shopping with the kid. (This is a very common type of accident, hence all the 'Baby On Board' signs!)0 -
Some Insurers find people with children are safer risks0

Availability of parts, or perhaps cost of parts, or maybe just because the Colt is less common and the companies find it harder to assess the risk, so play it safe, for themselves of course, not you!
Also, the cost to replace the car, if a write off is higher I guess, a 1998 306 is worth <£1000, a 2003 MX5 £3k or £4k maybe, maybe a 2007 Colt would be worth a bit more?0 -
did a quote for the ole 306, about 40 less than the colt, still above the 500 and nearly 200 more than 09's cost0
