Martain says : 'Don’t bother waiting ‘till your renewal date to check for a cheaper provider, most insurers will refund you the rest of the year's premiums, provided you haven't claimed.'

Seems that Norwich Union direct isn't one of them!
My husband renewal came though for his car insurance just a few days before it was due to start, he was away on business at this time. It was with Norwich Union Direct. Found a cheaper quote on confused.com and tried to cancel N U on his behalf, was told he had to ring but was assured by the operater that he wouldn't have to pay a fee for cancelling (one day into policy). The following day he returned and rang to cancel, £24 had already gone out of his account that day by Direct Debit (wish I had thought to cancel that!) and he has to pay an additional £9! We now were hardly making a saving with the cheaper quote but had a point to make. Is this charge for one days insurance a true reflection of the cost or is it in fact a penalty charge? Wondered if I could claim it back in a similar way to bank charges? (see bank charges - illegal?) Any ideas on this? Might give it a try. Any advice?
  • Am moving house and when looking at renewing car insurance found quotes to be way over price I expected cos of new address. Anyway, thanks to ppl on this board, have been to screentrade, and not only were they £100 cheaper than anywhere else, I'll also (hopefully) get £100 cashback! Yippee! :j

Edit: Just bought it on Screentrade via Quidco, but Quidco have only credited me with £55 cashback. Ggrr! So watch out folks - don't just go for them for the cashback.
  • Using the four steps I have saved £140 on my wifes insurance.

My insurance is now up for renewal.

In one of my less focused moments watching ITV an advert came on from a large uk insurance company. My memory recalls it saying that if a cheaper insurance could be found elsewhere they would refund the whole ammount, rather than just the differance.

Is this actually a genuine offer, and has anyone tried and been successful in doing it?

  • Hi Guys,

Firstly i wanna say a huge thankyou to Martin for writing his fabulous book and also to you guys for all your advice. Just thought I would let you know that I have just saved almost £200 on my car insurance and for someone under 25 I think this is HUGE!!!!!! :D I stayed with my original provider, but changed form monthly repayments to a yearly lump sum, from a 10 month insurance policy to a 12month policy and reduced my annual mileage!!! I am so impressed that I had to let you know!!

    Thanks again!!!

Just got a really cheap quote from Screentrade, however after reading through the fine print in the fully comp policy, it excludes "any person over 75 years at the time of their injury" Thought that sounded weird, so rang cust services, and they confirmed it to be correct. So, if elderly parents were also travelling in the car, they'd be excluded. Worth knowing folks

Are you a member of an affinity group like a trade union or similar? I found that going through the insurer linked with the Civil Service Motoring Association, Frizzell, I cut my premiums in half.

Incidentally the staff of quite a wide range of public sector organisations qualify for membership of the CSMA.

went on the money supermarket, came up with several good quotes, however when i went further into it for a detailed quote, the price well and truly shot up. Then my renewal came from privilege and I went on line and they knocked £61 off for doing it on line - same co same cover

I have just renewed my insurance with Lloyds/TSB. The original renewal was £220, but I got an on-line quote at their web site for £210 and I upped the mileage. I phoned them and was put through to an experienced adviser as the wanted the repeat business. She managed to get the quote down to £201!!!!!!!!!!!
    POINTS TO NOTE:
    * I have noticed that we no longer have third party insurance on a different car.
    * Also the main driver is the person in control of the vehicle on a time basis not the one who drives the most miles - this has now been swapped to me.
    * Restricting the mileage reduces the bill, but you may be challenged over this on a claim.

Just like banks the insurance companies are the enemy do make sure you understand the conditions of your policy.
